I thought it was called Angel's trumpet, but have also seen it called Devil's trumpet. (as the flowers point up on these, instead of "down from the Heavens" like most of the trumpet flowers.
Anyway, it's a unique flower. That has huge blooms that are only open for a day. The flowers have an intense fragrance, which I have read helps attract night-flying moths. They form seeds in pods that are pokey with super sharp needle type things sticking all over it. Like even with gloves you will get poked. I didn't even replant any seeds this year, and some plants found their way up from under the landscaping.
I have also read that the flowers are poisonous to livestock (and people).
Very lovely photo. Wonderful composition. Now that you mention it, I have only ever see the ones that droop down. They do have a lovely fragrance. And it seems to me that the stamen and pistils inside the flower are a bit more yellow on those hanging ones.
Great shot of this very poisonous flower! I was told not to plant it while having young children rt teenagers at home. Apparently the flowers can be boiled to make a hallucinating drug. I did have them and they are stunning when they grow into huge bushes. They were called Angel's Trumpet.
@mbrutus Thank you. Only one of the greenhouses around us sells the plant. They are annuals, but this one came up this year even though I didnt' plant it. Love "free flowers" :)
