Fat Albert coming in to land.... by carole_sandford

Fat Albert coming in to land....

..... it’s not often that I am in the right place at the right time, but today I was. I don’t travel this road often, but in all the time I have lived in this county there have never been warning lights flashing outside RAF Waddington, telling me to stop because a plane is coming in to land! There am I at the front of the queue of traffic, I had my camera but couldn’t reach it, so the phone it had to be!
It’s proper name is the Hercules, but for some reason the military call it the Fat Albert ( not sure why, other than it’s certainly not streamlined). Phil tells me that here aren’t too many of them around now, but it was the workhorse of all military planes, used for moving troops & military stuff to some of the hellholes of the world.
Thank you for all comments ,favs, tp & pp, so very much appreciated!
Now that is a good, serendiptous shot. Well done!

Nice catch of it coming into land you even have a great leading line of the road. Easy fav for me and I'm only slightly jealous!

The C130 ‘Fat albert’ Herculese - successfully flew me to countless sh**holes across the globe in my 24 years service. Noisy, uncomfortable and always, the end destination was 6 months plus away from home.
I have never had to stop at these lights in all the time we’ve lived in Lincs.

Wow excellent timing Carole. It reminded me of travelling through the villages at the back of RAF Scampton when we were there in the early 70s. The traffic used to be stopped when the Vulcans came in to land. The noise was incredible. I think we even had skid marks on the roof of our car, ha ha. fav

Perfect image, especially since taken by a mobile. Fav. I remember the Hercules landing in Malta during colonial times.

Fantastic, instant fav and will show my teenager when he gets back from hiking. Being a cadet, all things RAF fascinate him and he has done a camp at RAF Waddington. Loves all the planes and knows all the techie info at the drop of a hat - I love it! Such a super shot and perfect composition. Well done

Oh, familiar sight. The American military uses the C-130 as well. My hubby has jumped out of a few of them! LOL! He has never heard them call Fat Alberts, though. We live near the Ft. Bragg, one of the US's biggest military facilities, so we still see them occasionally flying over. Mostly we see C-17s.
