EXTRAS: Mountain Watercolour by casablanca

EXTRAS: Mountain Watercolour

Had a go at challenge number 2 with my new "artsy-fartsy gang" on here, which is proving rather fun to have a go at an online tutorial en masse and share the fun together.

If you fancy trying it, this is the tutorial. You just follow it step by step.

Though until I saw this one, I had no idea brushes had numbers and had not heard of a pallet knife of the kind he was using. Masking tape tore the water area when I removed it, so tried to mend that. Also dropped some paint by accident on the top left but am pretending they are more birds LOL. Couldn't get the hang of the kitchen roll cloud thing? Is the paint supposed to be dry or wet at that point? I just ended up with bits everywhere as if I had just used a rubber on pencil?

Reed were ridiculously hard to me and I am not best pleased with them, but there you go! Had a try.
You did a wonderful job. This looks beautiful.

@casablanca this is like visiting on old friend. I really struggled with the reeds. I used a kitchen knife instead of a palate knife and gentle dabbed the sky with the kitchen paper. I know that Cazzi and Jackie had a problem with the masking tape but mine was ok. I am loving seeing how they have all turned out and we have all got a different slant On the mountains. Good to see them all on the artsy-fartsy-gang tag.

@wakelys I am glad I am not alone in that! I couldn't work out how to get the brush to paint thin enough for those delicate reeds he did! I used a metal skewer that I usual use for baking potatoes in the oven as I didn't have a palette knife! It is fun doing it all together, isn't it? I feel pretty clueless but am really enjoying it.

This is so beautiful, a wall hanger for sure. It must be so much fun doing something together in this fun group.

@ludwigsdiana You're welcome to join in!

Great! I like the result.
For the clouds, the paint should be wet. Practically, you are lifting the color. Once it dries, it isn't possible.
What happened in your case, my guess, is that your paper gave in to rubbing. I was telling Jackie as well that, from my experience, if you can sort things out with almost all supplies, the most important one is the paper. Good quality watercolor paper is crucial. And there's different types of good quality paper, too. Just to make things complex. If you can, buy at least two types of watercolor paper. That weighs at least 300 g or 140 lb.
The other characteristics aren't that important as the weight.
School grade blocks are usually 200-250 g. Which is ok for exercises. But for this type of painting, you need heavier paper.
I like the birds, including the unplanned :)
The sky turned out right. The reflections in the lake, including the sky reflection is really cool. And i am not sure if you added the ripples in the water, but if you haven't, that's a good call. I made a zebra out of my lake, when i should have left it with no ripples. Or should have practiced how to make the ripples... :)
Well done!

Wonderful to see what you done with this one!

I am not an artist and I think you have done wonderful here!

Looks so peaceful.

@monikozi Ah, that's interesting about the kitchen roll cloud thing then. My paper pad says 140g/m2. Is that too lightweight then?
I smiled - ripples in the water? I had to look again......so they were a happy accident!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I shall keep trying.

Well done.....looks fine.

Oh my Casa that is brilliant and the addition of birds is oh So you!! Your sky, clouds and reflections are lovely. ( on @monikozi recommendation i have ordered some 300g paper )
@ludwigsdiana come play!!!!

@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thank you, how encouraging are you! The birds were right at the end of the video and I almost missed them. I like having them on there 🦅
January 31st, 2021
@casablanca they were? I think i missed them... :)
And yes, 140 g is too light. The paper probably becomes wavy and it tears off when rubbed.

You have done an amazing job and it's great seeing how all the paintings are so different from the same tutorial. I love that you added the birds, as he sneakily snuck them off camera. I wasn't brave enough and thought I'd just end up with black blobs in the sky. Yours are great and I'd never have known the ones on the left weren't deliberate. On to the next one now...!

Looks great to me! I am impressed! I cannot paint- unfortunately my brothers talent did not pass t me so I am unable to give any useful advice. I like it though!

Oh wow, well done! What a great thing to be doing and that you're having such fun with it. Fav.

I missed the birds in the tutorial. They must have flown away!

I can’t add to what has already been said. This is an excellent rendition and definitely nothing to be ashamed of. your mountains are perfect and I love the texture your torn paper on the shoreline gave the painting! It seems to me @monikozi Is the expert in this group and has tons of good advice to follow

I think you've done a great job!
January 31st, 2021
Lovely work.
January 31st, 2021
I didn’t realise it was a painting at first...lovely capture & it all looks very well executed. A good few tips here so you can only learn even more!

@grammyn I'll tell you a secret, but don't tell anyone. She's no expert (Moni). She just invested a bit more time into this hobby, when the artsy-fartsy gang appeared. And she was so happy to find her own flock of novices like her.
She's so glad to be of help and to encourage anyone willing to try.
And oh boy does she love to give advice... just can't help it. But worst of all, sometimes she's not taking her own advice.
But you are very kind and I'll pass her the good thoughts.

Love watching you all develop your new skill. I am impressed with your outcomes. I like the light and reflections on the water here.

Cool shot

Wow,this is really impressive! I love looking at all the different takes on the same subject. You artsy- fartsys should consider getting your own project, wouldn’t that be cool
February 1st, 2021
you did very well
February 2nd, 2021
this is very nice, your sky and mountains are excellently rendered as are the reflections. aces!

i just finished mine of this. while i think i got the clouds perfect, like you i struggled with the reeds and my reflection colours are a bit off. i also struggled with the mountains then i made an error on the trees forgetting that there was a masking tape right across the middle of the canvas.
