No to Big Cruise Ships! by caterina

No to Big Cruise Ships!

Another day in Venice, but this time no romantic photos. While at dinner at some friends' house we saw the passing of one cruise ship. it was enormous, It looks like a floating apartment building, with many decks, which makes it much taller than anything in Venice, where the tallest buildings are four or five stories high. The Church of the Redentore in the background can give you an idea of the size of the ship. Some of these ships are more than 1,000 feet long. Piazza San Marco, the largest public space in Venice, is less than 600 feet long. Cruise-ship tourism in Venice has increased fourfold in the last fifteen years, and the city is now the cruise capital of Europe. They cause damages to the aesthetic, the static of the buildings, the quality of the air. Therefore there is an association called NoGrandiNavi requesting that the big ships don't arrive to the center of the city. Request hat, accepted by the previous government, should become effective next year. If you really want to see magnificent pictures of the cruise ships in the center of Venice look up the work of Gianni Berengo Gardin

The ship really does dwarf the church, in fact, the image almost looks photoshopped it looks so out of proportion :-o

@paul10 Not only it is not photoshopped, but my tele is broken and I could not use it here, otherwise the effect would have appeared even greater

Hate them!

Great pov and capture. They certainly don't sit well with the old architecture of Venice

Words fail me, thank goodness this will soon stop

It's unbelievable, and Berengo Gardin did a wonderful work on it!

These floating cities are ruining so many place for those of us who tread lightly. Love your shot, it makes the point very well.

It must be so awful for the residents of Venice - your image highlights just how intrusive these cruise ships are.

Another example of the way our society destroys the things it loves in pursuit of the almighty dollar/euro/pound/rouble,etc

I've just looked at the link you posted and am absolutely appalled. No wonder the locals are up in arms. I couldn't read the script, of course, but the photos spoke for themselves.

I wonder how many of the cruise ships set-off from my city.
They've just got bigger and bigger over the years. This really shows off the scale.

That is HUGE! A floating city on a ship...crazy!

This breaks my heart. All for the love of money. So next year the ban goes into effect?

Great photo. I am glad they finally arrived at a happy resolution. And thanks too for the link to the Huffington Post. Otherwise, I would never have heard the news about Alex Del Piero e la moglie Sonia. Tanto triste. No?
June 15th, 2018
@mbrutus 😂😂😂 the link of course was for the photos of Berengo Gatdin. I didn’t know that it would give you access to all the gossip. Now you know about Del Piero, lucky you!
