Lazzaretto

These are the remnants of the Lazzaretto where more than 5000 people died of plague in the 1600’s. It was designed a century earlier by the famous architect Sanmicheli. During WWII it was used as a deposit of bombs that in 1945 exploded destroying a precious example of hospital architecture. A different view of this building was posted on June 12 by Massimo@spectrum

Oh my, I'm surprised any of it survives. Interesting and tragic information, I guess that's the nature of the building though

What a shame so much was lost of this historic site. This small part looks very interesting and significant.
