I see what @jgpittenger is saying, but I assumed this was the effect you were going after -- to see in focus beyond the curtain of the closeup of the leaves. Perhaps like being far-sighted. Not being able to see what is in front of your face. But then I see your request for suggestions. Would it be to use a tripod and set your aperture to put everything in focus, and then use a super fast shutter speed? But then the leaves would look frozen in place. Or maybe a slow shutter speed that would capture the falling action? Clearly I haven't ever tried this myself but if I were there with you now we could go out and try it!
