Stacking wood by catsmeowb

Stacking wood

Have the front panels off the woodshed for easier access; Malcolm stacking and I am taking a quick break to record our progress.
It is getting that time, nice team work

@sarasdadandmom we are almost done! we stacked all that Malcolm had split, realized we did not have enough to fill the shed, so he split some more yesterday and now we have more to do. we are fortunate to have had so much ready to go this year, all dried and just waiting to be cut and split. and that we have a wood splitter. makes the work go so much faster. he also uses that wood splitter to tires off of rims. he is so clever. of course, the rims are of no use afterwards.

I actually enjoy stacking wood - it's like jig saw puzzle to get just the right log in the right place. I used to stack two cords each year - now wood is so expensive here on the Cape I only get one cord. Great exercise!

@beba8162 it is wonderful exercise and also great team work. since getting the wood splitter, i feel so much more useful than i have in other years since i can participate in more of the process. we are fortunate in that we do not have to buy all of our wood because we clean up some of our land of blow-downs. then we simply supplement is we need to with a load a tree-length, let it season and then cut it up for next year. we do not spend much on fuel at all.

Goodness you do go through a lot of wood; that is some job.

@claireuk we have a bit more to put into the shed and then our winter supply will be done and we can put the front of the shed back on so the snow won't get onto the wood. we have a two carts with wheels each that carries enough wood for over a day. one stays on the porch, covered, and one goes into the house. when one is emptied, we switch them out, so in theory, I never run out of wood or have to go out and get it on my own. it does not always work out that way but that is how it is supposed to work.

ohhhh yes, it is that time of year again isnt it?! My husband and i usually help my parents gather wood for the winter as well. My dad splits them on the wood splitter while the rest of us stack it in the wood shed. Not a long process when you have lots of people helping. We like to make a day of it. Head up into my dads lease in the bush, have a weenie roast and hot coffee if its chilly, then cut down dead trees to bring home. I quite enjoy it actually....when my back is good anyway :)

@kdimagery we used to do my parent's wood and then come home and put up our own. they would have theirs delivered all split but we would first have to move their old wood and then stack their new wood into their basement. it was quite a task as they were very particular. as my father slid farther into the past, he would think that malcolm was stealing his wood! i would remind him that malcolm was my husband and he would chuckle and shake his head and say, "so, I know him?" . we were just talking about that as we were putting up the wood the other day.

@catsmeowb Awe haha, that is quite a memory isnt it?!!? i bet it gives you guys a chuckle everytime you think of it :) My dad is very particular when it comes to stacking the wood in the shed as well, lol, but if it is done right, it saves on so much room and you can fit in so much more! plus, it looks really neat :)

and this speaks to me .. our part of the world is also getting ready for winter...last night a freak wind strom came through and blew over our tent used for winter work on autos and it took three of us to right it and pound the spikes back into the ground ..and I forgot the camera I was busy holding onto a large kite of sorts...lol.. i will be back later to view more of your work...

@kdimagery our neighbors down the road measure their stacks - they are so neat and look so nice. i am so glad we have a shed because i am really the worst stacker in history. any stack i do leans. i am very fortunate malcolm is my husband, he is so patient. i do love to stack wood, though. it is like a puzzle.

that's a lot of wood!

@summerfield i know - thought we were all done but after we got it all stacked, realized we had more room. so i wandered off to take shots and malcolm went down below to split more wood before the rains came again. once we light the stove in october, it does not go out until sometime in may. we do have a solar panel, too, but it only runs when the sun is out and we will not need it to run when the stove is running. for now, i turn it on to take the chill off if i need to. it only costs $5 a year to run the fan.
