CJ has ventured away from Downtown LA and we're visiting an area of Los Angeles called La Brea Avenue. La Brea is a Spanish phrase that can mean "the tar." Henceforth, welcome to the La Brea Tar Pits.
This is an active excavation site and museum in the middle of the city. CJ is taking a photo of the actual tar pits, including a recreation of what happened to many animals, insects, and plants who were trapped in the sticky asphalt. Sad as it may be, this preserved them for us to find today.
In fact, more Ice Age fossils have found at the La Brea Tar Pits than any other site in the world! CJ is amazed that the concrete jungle of Los Angeles used to be home to thousands of fascinating ancient creatures and plants. 🦕🙂
@kwind - So neat!! It a nice park and museum. My mom worked in this area when I was little so we would drive by it all the time. The scene would really spark my imagination. :)
I had hoped to see this when I was out in LA in the 90's but arrived just 5 minutes late for the last group to get in. It struck me too that the city was built around it and not over it- but that was a good thing! Good shot- glad you were careful about that tar!!
@olivetreeann - Back in the 90s I was a little kid, you probably would have saw me there with my mom. Haha. But yeah really cool how the city is built around it, I never thought about how unique that is. Thanks much Ann!
