I was in the right place at the right time today! I was walking through my Mom's front yard on my way to take flower pics. I heard something in the tree I was walking under, looked up and couldn't believe my eyes! I was so glad I had my zoom lens and this beautiful bird let me take several pics! I've never seen one close up before and I've had them on my photo bucket list forever. I did a happy dance when it was all over! :0)
I knew they were our largest woodpecker, but I was still surprised at its size. It was the size of a small duck! He had his back to me for some of the shots. He was weaving his head back and forth looking at something I couldn't see. It was so cool! :0)
Thank you so much for your lovely responses to yesterday's dragonfly pic!!! :0)
Haven't they said timing is everything? This is fantastic! I can imagine how you felt when you looked up - such a super shot. This is the first time I've seen one this close, too. It would be fun just to see, but to have the camera with the zoom ready - wow! You made a spectacular photo of him.
As promised on FB, Carolyn, I am faving this. Congratulations on this beautiful shot of a magnificent woodpecker who is at the very top of my photo wish list. Captured him once before but only from afar. They are typically very elusive.
WOW! Such a great pic of one of these gorgeous guys! I love their call/sounds too. I followed one through the woods early early this spring. They are so cool. I noticed I'd not faved it..I think I saw it and commented on facebook from my IPAD on the dock at the lake. So forgot to come over and fav. This is amazing!
I looked at it again and you not only got a great close up of the bird, but the tree he is on and all the surroundings are gorgeous too. The pic I got was rubbish compared to this. haha I got one with a red Headed and a Pileated on the same tree too.and it was weird because it seemed that no matter how HUGE the Pileated, the red headed flew up and chased him off the tree....the red headed appeared really aggressive...odd.
