This is a Question Mark butterfly. When I saw my first one last year, I didn't have my insect guide yet. I found it online, but it had Question Mark for the name. I wondered why it wasn't identified. It took me several butterfly sites before I realized that was the name of the butterfly. :0)
LOL...this one and the Comma...thought they meant Common and spelt it wrong!
Gorgeous capture...can see the velvetiness of its wings and body. Beautiful. Fav.
The Question Mark and Comma have gorgeous wings, but the secret silver punctuation on the underside is my favorite. I wish there was an Exclamation Point butterfly. Nice velvety texture, Carolyn.
You've given me something to really keep my eyes open for - I know I've never seen one that looks like this. This is definitely an awesome picture. As I frequently see what you post in the next few days, I'm going to be on the watch even more closely! Great shot.
I've noticed that lep in one of my pocket guides. Don't think I've ever seen one yet, though its range includes my location. Turns out the naming isn't someone's joke. My [better pocket] guide says "Look for silver question mark in center of hindwing underside. Two broods a year..."
@rhoing Thank you! I've seen the Question Mark on the hindwing and have actually gotten a few pics of it, but none good enough to post. There's a Comma butterfly, too. :0)
