Hawking by cjwhite

Hawking

This is the closest I've ever gotten to an Eastern Phoebe. I know it saw me, but it didn't seem to be scared.

The Phoebe sits on the end of bare branches and watches for insects. It flies down, catches the insects, and flies back to its perch. This is called hawking. It seemed too cold for insects to me, but I saw it fly down several times.

Thank you so much for your kind responses to yesterday's unlikely pair of birds! :0)
Great shot! I think I've seen this species once in my yard.

@espyetta We've got about a 1/2 inch on the ground. I don't think we will get much more than that. The high for tomorrow is supposed to be 13F. :0)
