Mask Macabre

To Birmingham on Saturday with the WCC Digital Group (well, five of us anyway). I spotted this gruesome-looking object along the canal.

Like something out of Lord of the Flies! What was it doing there? Must be really ancient, surely WW2 vintage. Great find.

Well seen and as you say very macabre. I am expecting there to be a head attached, decomposing of course!

this is the kind of pic you could stare at for ages, was it a sculpture. were the eyes filled with cloth? these masks are frightening, but I suppose they should be.
