Thanks for your reply. My husband thinks it's a larch as it's the only coniferous tree we know which drops its needles

You are probably right, but it doesn’t have the upward sweep of the branches that a larch has, just knotted twisted branches. So must be a different variety, it was a 3ft bush when we bought it 15 years ago.
