Growing up in S. Florida, I always heard about the Cuban Missile Crisis but didn't realize how close we were to being destroyed. Everglades NP is the only national park with a missile base. It was deactivated in 1979, but the buildings remain. There were 72 missiles here in the park. Of those, 18 were nuclear warheads. All of these missiles were defense missiles, not intended to get to Cuba, so S. Florida would have been obliterated. They still give tours of the base, which is in the middle of the national park. There is a book, "One Minute to Midnight" about this period of time. Apparently, they were quite close to nuclear war.
Thankfully it de-escalated
