Lima--The LUM by darylo

Lima--The LUM

Before going to Lima, I developed some Google Maps for different areas where I had either read about something or thought it might be of particular interest. Thank goodness I led our little group to one of the most engaging museums I have ever encountered--The Place of Memory, Tolerance, and Social Inclusion or (LUM). We could have easily skipped it. Luck.

Here are its objectives:
The LUM promotes a critical and objective judgment towards violent discourses that violate the integrity of the person. To do this, it welcomes the diversity of voices and faces that experienced violence during the period 1980-2000, and seeks coexistence among the various memories, for mutual learning. It assumes the challenge of establishing dialogue as a starting point to reflect on our differences and live with them.

For the performance of its functions, the LUM has five guidelines:

History and memories of the period of violence 1980 - 2000: to promote reflection and understanding about the period of violence and its consequences in society
Learning and reflection on history and memories: develop a strategy for learning, reflection and dialogue that fosters values and skills, aimed at strengthening a culture of peace
Building memories and knowledge: promote the generation of information and knowledge on issues related to the period 1980 - 2000 and its consequences in the present
Memories for life and dignity: recognize the effects generated by violence and coordinate with the victims activities that affirm their dignity, citizenship and rights
Intertwined memories: foster dialogue and cooperation with national and international memory initiatives

It was all in Spanish, and I did not understand "directly" what the exhibit detailed, but visually, auditorily, spatially, I got the gist of it and wanted to know more, more, more.

The museum is rather new (only a few years old) and it's perched at the top of a cliff in the city. The archicture of the building is a marvel to see too.

I believe this shot was right outside the entrance as it's next to some other shots I took of the rocks they had embedded in the walls of the building. This shot is taken with my now ancient Rebel T2i, which I took on the trip to have as a quick pull out in my bag. I only used my big camera 2 of the 10 days I was in Peru!
Really interesting reading this. And the image is great.

I can see why my rope photo brought me to this one -- thanks for the link! I went to the Museum of Tolerance in Santiago, Chile, and found it fascinating and horrifying -- but thankful that there was such an informative exhibition. Must get to Lima now.
