@grammyn I HATE to diet, but I am following a meal plan that I think works for me, but I will have to make some serious adjustments. There's PLENTY of food--in fact, I feel so stuffed all the time, AND I do have to make it pretty much (so it's healthy, but when you want to go out...it's a stretch to find what you need). So are I'm on day 4 and I've lost 3 pounds. One side effect is my back hurts in the lower region, so I need to keep an eye on that. Nothing I'm eating is bad for you, but there is a serious decrease in carb consumption. Lots of veggies (yum) and lots of meat (but not high fat meats). I suspect that they are anti dairy and anti sugar. Sugar I can give up (not a sweets eater that much) but cheese. Oh glorious cheese. It has not shown up anywhere on the plan yet. This is a 14-day supercharged thing I'm trying. Just had tuna, garbanzo beans, celery, carrots, peppers and some homemade dressing. Honestly, there's too much food, but somehow I'm burning it off by end of day! Magic monkeys.
heehee!! Very funny way of creating an appealing meal for your diet. We've been doing the paleo which is vastly reducing sugar and wheat intake. Jim's really seriously on it and I'm along for the ride. It allows cheese and eggs so I'm happy!
@taffy I thought paleo was not cheese friendly. This one allows also legumes and sprouted bread (which I find so amazingly delicious that I don't miss any other bread). Paleo is too restrictive for me but I see what I'm doing has some of same principles. Last night, though, I was out with kids at a massive entertainment complex and had to skip meal because nothing there was in allowed plan (7th day I can do anything). Luckily I had almonds and water. The food is so filling I really didn't mind skipping dinner in the end.
@darylo I haven't read the stuff myself -- just going by what Jim is doing as he's taking it very seriously. Paleo allows cheese and eggs, according to Jim. And of course lots of vegetables. Fruit in moderation. Nuts are good. And dark chocolate. So I'm sort of on it on his coattails and have kept off about 6 needed to lose pounds. But I cheat a lot more than he does. For me, what's made the biggest difference is vast reduction in cookies, almost no beer, no pancakes/french toast b'fasts, etc. I have horrid eating habits so this is a huge step forward for me as my weight problem is all due to sugar intake. And by being supportive to Jim, it's helping me.
@taffy That's good to hear! Whatever works. The thing about these types of diets is they take lots of prep time. I have stopped drinking altogether and only have one cup of coffee a day and the rest is water. I'm not a sweets eater, but if I want them, day 7 of any week is totally free of restrictions! Today, I had buffalo meatballs, spaghetti squash, and homemade sauce (I make that all the time anyway). Was easy, but no one in the family will touch. So there's one of my issues. I DO NOT want to make a whole bunch of multiple meals. Will do this my full 14 days and then evaluate and have a family meeting. When it calls for chicken and shrimp, everyone's on board--other things, not so much. I'm also glad Trader Joe's is nearby as I refuse to go to Whole Foods (I know it's a great place, but I don't have those kinds of funds at all). :) So far, I've lost at least 3 pounds (my scale broke) and it's only been 5 days, so I think it's working. :)
@darylo Gosh, it's got to be so much harder when cooking for a family. Good luck with that! I do only a small portion of the cooking and it's just the two of us, which makes a difference. Trader Joe's is fantastic -- we go there a lot. And a newer chain out of Wisconsin called Mariano's. Which is great but I'm still mad at them for not letting me photograph in their store! I've heard that you shouldn't go by a scale but by how your clothes are fitting as the better measure.
@taffy Yes on the clothes! That's what matters. I tend to be much heavier from my years as an athlete, so when I exercise, my muscle weight takes over--I have done 3 tris and some other events over the years, but still very heavy. Getting old stinks sometimes. :/
@darylo As my mother-in-law used to say, 'better than the alternative.' Hang in there...and really, best of luck with balancing your needs with those of your family. Sometimes it's important to think long term and your health benefits them...
