Northern flicker Male (Yellow-shafted) by darylo

Northern flicker Male (Yellow-shafted)

I looked outside and low and behold several of these woodpeckers (I have never caught before) were all over the ground. When I went to identify it, I was confused by photos with the red malar (mustache) below the eye and then I found out in the west, it is red and in the east it is black!

Taken through the dirty glass door with the kit lens (max 135 I think), so I have cropped severely and I was on AI servo with a broad range of focus (I think). I grabbed it so fast I didn't have time to think.
Wonderful clarity. He is such a pretty bird. Fav!

This looks like an illustration from one of the Bird Books you consulted Daryl. It looks a little 'painterly' - probably due to the smoothing applied to the noise generated by the elevated ISO - but this adds rather than detracts from the image for me. Give yourself a big pat on the back for this one.

Great capture, Daryl. A smaller red headed flicker spends time at my feeder but he!s too fast for me.
