My daughter celebrated her birthday in Japan this year, but when she got back she requested that I make my signature ribs and some kale chips. I could not refuse! I'm THINKING of submitting this shot in my next photo review for the Photo club as the theme is food, but then again, I'm thinking of another shot: http://365project.org/darylo/didn-t-make-cut/2014-04-21
If anyone wants to weigh in on thoughts, let me know. I can see already on this one I have to straighten the bottom line, but I don't know if DOF here is too narrow. I liked that one crisp line, but maybe the rest is just dead space. With my other shot, I think it's not interesting enough...decisions, decisions...and time is running out.
@taffy@grammyn@seanoneill@rvwalker would you mind giving me a bit of advice (Taffy, you are likely completely unavailable, but I thought I'd try). I need to pick a food shot from the last year for the next review and these are my most recent...
@amandal It was awesome. I can do ribs up goooood. But is it a shot worthy of a "food" theme for my photo club I'm wondering? I have an alternate shot I'm considering, but I think I am not getting a good concept for the critique coming up...hmmmm...better eat another rib. :)
I don't know ANYTHING about food photography, other than it's much harder than it looks....having said that, I think this one is more interesting than the other. I think you're right about DOF being a tad too narrow, but I don't see a need to straighten the bottom line. This is TANTALIZING and I'm not even a rib fan!
I prefer this to the other also - I have no credentials for giving a critique but I do love the way it seems to sizzle and I love the light bokeh and focus
I actually shot food for years ... as I owned a small Gluten Free company :) I would choose the ribs over the alt photo as well! I AM a Rib Fan... and this image makes me think ... "mmmmmmmm... Riiiiiiiibbbbbssss" :)
I'm not a fan of ribs, but I think if I got near these and smelled them, I'd lose my mind - they look sooooooo YUMMY! I'd probably go with this one for the textures (crusty meat, grill), colors (meat, grill, flames below), and overall effect (desire to pounce on it and gobble it down). Great shot! :)
Apparently I am in the minority. I like the ther one better. So either I am not a good food critic or not a good photograph critic. Either wat you should probably consider the majority opinion!! This one does have some great detail.
@danette@judithdeacon@kbird61@grammyn@swagman@juliedduncan@amandal@jamibann@nanalisarocks@888rachel Oh thanks for the feedback. I'm a bit beside myself as I waited thinking it was midnight tonight I had to submit, and it was NOON today....oh, missed opportunities. And on a subject I know too much about. I've sent an email pleading leniency, but I suspect I will be without a review Tuesday night. Soooooo bummed. I have the rib one fully edited and ready to go in case the photo Gods allow my submission. Not holding my breath. :(
I had that happen with me with photo club. I went a few times and eventually quit. Wasn't much into the themes, I was a little kid compared to most there, and was scarred from my first time being ripped apart with a sexy selfie. It was horrifying. Hope you can still submit.
Sorry I'm so late, but I missed your request for a comment. This looks tastier, but I prefer the greater detail of the other photo. I hope all is well with you. I'm off on a camping trip for a week.
