Tree chopping competition by dide

Tree chopping competition

This is our axeman son, competing in his favourite event at Rotorua on the weekend. In this event, the axemen have to chop holes for the boards, go up three boards on one side, chop half the uppermost log. They then go back to the ground, removing the boards as they go. They repeat this on the other side of the tree, then complete chopping the log off at the top. In this photo he has nearly completed the event. They stand 3 metres off the ground, and the upper log is 4 metres high. (He came a very close second to a visiting Australian tree cutting champion!)
Great action shot..

Great action shot, I always marvel at the controlled and balance these athletes display in events like this.

Hi Dianne,
great shot. When I was a teenager my boyfriend then was a wood chopper, so I used to go to competitions. Seeing the photo brings back memories. Well done to your son. There always was great rivalry between the Aussie choppers and us!
