My town by dide

My town

This is Waiuku (on a dull dreary evening), but here is a brief history lesson…. Waiuku is on the southern end of the Manukau Harbour and many years ago it used to be a bustling port. Once the big boats stopped coming into port, the estuary became overgrown with mangroves and silted up badly. It's a bit controversial, but a group called 'The Mudlarks' have for years been removing the mangroves and we now have an estuary that boats can use at high tide. The collage (clockwise from top left) - estuary minus mangroves; the original pub called 'The Kentish'; anchors; and a view of the old wharf area.
Great set of images of our little town... I see the Mudlarks are busy on a new challenge in clearing another area...

Seeing where people are from is so interesting! I appreciate the narrative that accompanies the collage, too. I looked it up on the map, and we must have drive somewhat nearby as we went from Auckland to Rotorua and sightseeing around the area.
