When my dad was in his late teens (around 1940ish) he carved this fire screen for his mum. It was used during the summertime to hide the ugly open fireplace. The screen came back to my mum and dad when grandma died. We have it now in our house - it's very cleverly done and must have taken weeks to carve, then pick out the deer and birds by using a hammer and nail to pock mark the surrounding area of wood.
