This is Glory Bay, Pitt Island. The 100 ton brig 'Glory' struck a reef in 1827 and all on board were saved. The cargo was also saved. Six men then sailed a longboat to mainland NZ and ended up in the Bay of Islands (North of the North Island). This 1300km journey took 11 days. They then returned in another ship to rescue the crew and cargo. This little red hut was built around 1860 for on-shore accommodation for visiting whaling ships. It was actually used more as a shepherds' cottage and has recently been restored to its original condition. A very special place to visit. I could have spent a couple of hours there, but we only had about 10 minutes before we had to race off to the airstrip and fly back to Chatham Island.
