"He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth." (Psalms 104:13-14)
Today was a gorgeous day and the temperature was quite comfortable, although some of our residents were still cool, and they needed their sweaters. They spent time outside in our enclosed courtyard this afternoon talking about gardening and deciding what they wanted to do with the tomatoes and peppers they had planted earlier this Spring. The one resident said she wanted fried tomatoes. Not everyone agreed with that, but as a group they did decide to make a big pot of chili with cornbread. They have a wonderful crop of tomatoes and peppers so the produce they grew will make a huge pot, enough to feed about forty people. This one resident, pictured here, wanted to assist with picking some of the ripe tomatoes. They had a great time talking about their favorite dishes. Our recreational therapist does a wonderful job providing a nice variety of programs and activities for our residents. Everything we do is geared to keeping their mind and body as active as possible. Besides everything else, the tomatoe is red, and a good photo for our theme.
I really like this one, Rick. I love the small details of this too. Like that her nail polish is chipped. It really adds to the photo. (Yes, would you believe that I also carry a small first aid kit in my camera bag along with some wipes and hand sanitizer? Lol, I may be a tad bit OCD. Just kidding.)
There is nothing better then walking out in the back yard and grabbing a few pieces of home grown goodness and enjoying it straight from the vine. Great shot :)
When I am at home, I live with a black and white photo of a laborer's hands with just picked peaches in my kitchen to daily remind me to be thankful for those who labor so that I may eat......this is priceless, and brings a bit of home to me in this far away place.
AND the lady is wearing red nail polish (unless you edited that one) and the tomatoe is red -- so it makes for a good theme photo.
p.s. I'm loving your new profile pic.
Rick, this is such a lovely shot for so many reasons. Love her delicate handling of the tomato and her painted nails. A girl's gotta look good! Great story and framing. I hope I can live in such a wonderful place when and if the time comes.
Thank you so much for your kind comments on my photos. I'll have to think about doing a series of Zelda Mae. I can tell that one person will NOT be amused - my mother! lol She finds absolutely no humor in my stick. My neighbors? Oh, it depends on which one. Some think I have a screw loose, but that's ok because it keeps me sane. Some are kind enough to genuinely laugh at my antics. My mother-in-law is actually one of my biggest supporters and I LOVE to make her laugh because the sound is so delightful. She is a gem. Thank you again & God Bless!
Such love and caring in this photo. It is beautiful. The compassion comes out in the hand and the touching of the fruit. This is a gem of a photograph.
I just second everything people have said....great for you to take so much time and caring looking after the elderly. It is so important to remember they have lived life, had their experiences and need to be treated with love and respect. i think the hand says more in your picture thananything else. Nice.
The story behind your photo today is so charming! The care that elderly community is getting sounds so dear and caring. I only wish they could all make old folks final home as comfortable as that! It's heartwarming to read your stories and see your accompanying pictures. Nicely done, Rick!
I love how you processed this. I think it's awesome that your residents get to keep a garden and partake in cooking together. Really nice support system they are able to build.
a lovely picture. Thanks for sharing the story behind it. Excellent activity to keep them grounded in the world. I love the history that is evident in her hand.
What a beautiful descriptive story and a descriptive hand as well. If I could sit with her for an hour and hear her story, I would feel blessed. What a great shot!
Wonderful photo and a wonderful story! So many 'aged care facility' cases are heartbreaking. Your work place sounds genuinely lovely and like a caring respectful and dignified place to spend these vulnerable years.
I love this photo. And the story that comes with it. Before my husband became a Marine I worked as a cook at our local Nursing Home. I fell in love with sooo many of the residents. It made me so happy to go to work and see their faces. They are so wonderful. Beautiful picture!!!!
I love your story and had a very vivid picture in my head of the scene. The photo is beautiful and I love that the woman's nail polish is tomato red, too. :)
