This beautiful piece of property sits right along the main highway, Rt 422 that runs from where I live now to where I grew up in Myerstown, Pennsylvania. It was known as The Tulphehocken Inn & Plantation. It was built in the mid 1700's, and history records a minimum of three visits by one, well known by all, George Washington. It is said one visit was to hunt, another to rest, and another to check on the progress being made on the construction of the Union Canal. If you remember, some time ago I included several photos of the historic Union Canal near where I live. That same canal runs right behind this property. I included a link for those of you interested in reading a little more about this fantastic place. The link actually shows you somke photos of the original interior and the outside buildings. I lived approximately 10 minutes from this place, and never once did I take a tour there. Oh yes, it spites me. When the place closed several years ago, they had a huge estate auction. That was one time we did visit the grounds however, I could not afford to purchase anything. The interior was magnificent, with 10 1/2 ft ceilings, large gorgeous pieces of furniuture which cost buyers into the thousands. The house and grounds alone was priced at, I believe 2 million. It did not sell, but finally a few years later it was purchased by two brothers for a fraction of the asking price. If I am correct, around $750. The house has been beautifully restored and it is now a private residence. I could only imagine. http://tulpehockenmanor.com/info.htm
great shot with the fence and thanks for posting the link as I was confused by the date of mid-1700s and the Victorian architecture of the manor. The link clarified that the original eight room stone house was turned into the Victorian mansion we see. Ahhh, now it makes sense! thanks again!
Gorgeous building! It's insane what a difference location makes in terms of housing prices. The small house I have my eye on in SF costs about that. Sigh.
Very nice picture and interesting piece of history. For that price you could get here only an apartment in one of the new and fancy big apartment houses.
I wouldn't even want to try and pronounce that name, lol, I would slaughter it. It's absolutely stunning--I love older buildings. Checking out your link now...
Beautiful! Thanks for the history. The only thing I own that is similar is the star on the outside of the building. Wonder what it would be like to live there?
@clarissajohal Clarissa, once you go onto the site and individually click on the small photos at the bottom of the larger photo, you can actually see some of the rooms.
Oh big WOW, that is a beautiful shot! I love the processing, would they let you go in and see the place? Knowing me I would go up and knock and ask! Great shot of their home!
What a beautiful building. Great shot. It must be wonderful living so close to so much of our US historical sites. There's a lot of history here is California, but I have always wanted to visit the original 13 Colonies.
Great capture! :D
