Well for those of you who been asking and wishing me well, here is the latest update. Sorry, I don't mean to gross anyone out. I saw the surgeon today and the cast was removed. Wow, what a relief. I think the itching was almost as bad as the pain at times. When I saw the incision, the bruising (which really isn't too bad) and the swelling, I knew why it was hurting as much as it was. The surgeon told me, no therapy for a week, and then only range of motion, no strengthening. He told me the artificial joint seated nicely, and he expects me to have excellent results. He also told me that when he went in, my joint was like marble, very hard, and it was clear to him why I was having so much joint pain. For now I wear a splint to support the joint while it continues to heal. I cannot believe how much I learned to do with one hand. Thank you for your continued prayers and support.
Well, I'm sure you'll be very glad that you had this done. Glad you didn't have to have any painful therapy today. Lookin' good, Rick. Keep on healing... :-)
Thanks Rick, I was getting ready to eat a cup cake and I seen the picture and put it back. lol.. Looks like they did a good job. You must be relieved that it is over and you are on the mend. Good luck and don't over do it.
Ewwwwww!!!!! A new joint? I've never heard of that in the wrist. We are pretty adaptable when forced. My left wrist was broken by a super power kicked soccer ball. Ouch!!!! I typed and used the weights where the elbows are at my sides while I pulled down on the bar. Hmmm .... not sure if that was smart but I did it. I also played soccer with my cast wrapped in a piece of foam that fit around the cast which went up to the elbow. Ha! No stopping me. ;-)
Wow, that is really swollen! I can see why he wants to hold off on therapy. It looks pretty raw still. Continuing my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery!
You are certainly educating us although I must confess I could only look at your picture for a moment before I turned away! This was not for the faint of heart! Continued success.
Oh wow. I know how much you can do with one hand. When I was 21 I just about cut off my index finger and the middle finger. Took 5 surgeries to fix my hand so I would be able to keep the finger. I dont have any nerves in the index finger but I dont care, and the index finger is crooked but I dont care, I'm 55 and still no arthritis. They gave me cortisone injections back then to help with that. They must have been amazing. I hope and wish you as much success. I know it wasnt the same kind of surgery but still same recovery process. Wishing you well. Good shots of your hand for sure.
It really does look like it was quite extensive. I'm glad it's over with and you are on the better end of this now. Some healing and therapy and I hope it is greatly improved.
Wow! That looks good and clean.
Great news that it is a success.
Good work nice neat job on the stitches.
I will continue to think of you - especially when you start physio !!
@alecio I am returning to work on Monday. I had plans to go back this past Wednesday, but with the pain as bad as it was, and me taking my pain pills, I wouldn't have been able to function too well.
Catching up on peoples shots... had some laptop troubles and still in CA.. not sleeping so here I am being grossed out by your photos... lol
SOOO glad to see the cast off. it must have been such a relief....and glad to hear the doc thinks things went well!!!
Make sure you dont pick your nose too much with that hand!!!
So glad to hear the surgeon is happy with the results too, always a good sign. I had a similar experience being in a sling for 2 months after a surgery on my R. shoulder...now since I was right handed I learned to do a lot of new things with the other hand too! Good luck in your continued recovery!
Wow, that looks like one long incision - that is nothing like the carpal tunnel release I had. Hope you're impoving & that the pain & stiffness will go as the days pass.
Well that's good news that you got your cast off but man, that big incision looks pretty painful to me so I hope it feels better than it looks!:)! I hope you're therapy goes smoothly and you're able to use both hands real soon! Oh I almost forgot, GREAT collage! :)
Ugh, you mention the itching and immediately I remembered last year when I had 32 staples in my head--the nerve damage made it feel like ants were crawling all over once it started to heal. This looks pretty good, though. I'm sure it doesn't feel very good right now. :(
Hope your therapy is going well and your wrist and hand are getting stronger each day! I broke my ankle 2, almost 2 1/2 years ago (right medial malleolus) and it itched soooooo much when the cast was removed.

I think we are very adaptable as human beings. Our bodies adapt when we are unable to use a part of us.
