Open The Door by digitalrn

Open The Door

A book is the "door" to adventure, the "door" to possibilities and greater learning. It's a "door" of escape.

I've never been an avid reader, in fact, I never learned to really enjoy a good book like some people do. Sadly, it wasn't until college that I actually read a book in its entirety. Looking back I realize I've missed so much, but it was something we were never exposed to as children. In the past few years I have read a few, but the book must grab my attention right away, or I will soon lose interest and it will go on the shelf. If the book grabs attention, it will then take me through a door to a new dimension in life, to another time and place. I do enjoy reading through a good educational book, but that is a different type of reading. I am so happy to see my Grand-Daughter read, and enjoy her books. It's a world I've never been a part of.
I’m surprised you’re not a reader since you’re so interested in history. Both of my parents were avid readers so my brothers and I are, too. Now my kids are voracious readers. After they got too old to be read to, my son would ask me to sit with him while we both read our own books silently. I loved that. My husband is like you, and he was not exposed to reading as a child either. I like your picture!

Fantastic visual! I have always loved to read, my husband has learned how to love it too. Unfortunately, my son is a fabulous reader and he hates it. I sure hope to find the right book for his hands to turn him around. I am also surprised that you're not a reader. It seems like few people actually admit that. Props to you! Plus, what an awesome take on the theme!

Wonderful shot, Rick. And a very effective title. I was never much of a reader either, and still am not. My husband LOVES to read and has a hard time understanding why I can't make myself sit down with a book. Part of it stems from my neurological condition that just won't allow me to without giving myself horrible migraines, aside from that there is no excuse....unfortunately our oldest has taken after me and really doesn't care to sit and read either. Our youngest, however, reads and reads and reads. My mother got her one of those E-readers by V.tech and she loves it. Makes me soooo happy that at least one of my kids won't be like me when it comes to books.

great photo!! i looove to read and do it often actually. but i am the same with you, if it dont grab my attention, then back on the shelf it goes. haha.

Wow, where do I start, Rick??!! I fear I may go on and on, so I'll try extra hard to keep this short. I don't know what book that is, but a part of what we can read is consistent with a passage from a book by one of my favorite speakers, Matthew Kelly: "God is far more interested in what you are than what you do. We are human *beings*, not human *doings*." Amen! Nice interpretation for the theme and a really nice shot!

I'm like you! It better grab my attention fast or I'm yawning!

Great shot and take on the theme Rick, I'm the same as you never really an avid reader, probably why I enjoy photography, they say a picture can paint a thousand words
June 1st, 2011
@rhoing The book is by Rick Warren, Purpose Driven Life.
June 1st, 2011
This is a great interpretation of the theme and a terrific choice!

Great shot!!! I love to read and especially love to see younger people reading actual books rather than something off of a screen. Love this!
June 1st, 2011
I like the shot Rick, but let me just say that reading non-fiction is just as valid as reading fiction. If it grabs your attention and gets you thinking about new things, then the non-fiction has also opened a door for you. I prefer non-fiction. Thanks to some wonderful non-fiction writers I've fished for crab in the Bering Sea, walked from Ur to Israel with Abraham, made a pilgrimage with a fourth century nun from Italy and wandered homeless with the refugees aboard the ill-fated Exodus II. So, don't feel obligated to read fiction (or non-fiction), just read! Great picture! (I knew it was Warren!)

Great message. I am personally lost without a good book to read. I just started reading a book called The Invisible Bridge.'There is a lot of history and it is fascinating.

My greatest pleasure in life is reading & am so glad you are beginning to enjoy it too ! I was surprise you weren't a reader as well because you know so much about things I thought you must be very well read ! Both my sons didn't read much when they were young but both now enjoy a good book but alas my husband reads the paper & Farmers Guardian & that's it !! Great photo with the book & your hand!

Really nice photo, Rick! I absolutely love to read, so my eyes went right to the words on the page and "we are human beings, not human doings," really caught my eye. Needed that today...
June 1st, 2011
as an avdid reader and a reading teacher I LOVE your entry!! :) when you have enjoyed a book, what was the genre? I love mysteries.....
June 1st, 2011
I love photographs of books! This is great and an awesome take on the theme!
June 1st, 2011
Fabulous! I love it all...! Thank you for promoting reading!
June 1st, 2011
@dmrams Della, the most recent ones were the latest of James Patterson.
June 1st, 2011
@digitalrn he is one of my favorites--you might want to try Stuart Woods also--especially the Stone Barrington series :)

I know what you mean by needing a book to grab you. I've never been a big reader, but now and again I do enjoy it. Recently, I've been listening to audiobooks as an alternative, and that I find to be quite satisfying.
June 1st, 2011
As you might guess I am a life-long reader and I married one too. Our kids also take pleasure in books. Of course books also mean audio books and ebooks. Any kind of storytelling can take you through that door!
June 2nd, 2011
@dmrams Thank you Della, I will check him out.

great shot. . . perfect mood coloring

I know just what you mean by going to that other dimension! I love to read, but for me it comes in waves and currently I'm not riding the readig wave (except the Bible of course) I love this shot and the words at the fingertips. perfect!
June 2nd, 2011
I always love reading, I stopped recently because of 365, hahahhaha, but I love photograph better. After my first year here, I will take another direction on my project, slow down a little, with just one album.
June 2nd, 2011
Used to be a great reader myself I would say that was my no1 pastime but in the recent past I haven't had much time for it not since the internet came anyway which I feel bad about but you only have a few hours available/day. I try to catch up before going to bed. Your photo & sentiments on this as a door to another world is so true.
June 2nd, 2011
I am not a reader either but will gravitate to photography books and theology books - I can read Francis Chan in one sitting. But then Scott Kelby's photography books are especially enjoyable and full of humor. My problem is I fall asleep as soon as I stop moving. :) Nice photo - looks like a good read too!
June 2nd, 2011
I love to read, but I get so sleepy when I read. Great capture.
June 3rd, 2011
I love this...

I am surprised to find out that you aren't much of a reader since you are such a strong writer. This picture is such a creative take on the door theme...you'd get my vote !
June 6th, 2011
I loved this version, and I am a big reader from childhood. I have always encourage our children to read, their first book was placed into their hands usually before they could read. But I read and read to all our grandchildren and hopefully will get a chance to read to our Great grandson on occasion we are lucky enough to get a visit.
