I love collecting vintage items, and one of the things I enjoy collecting are coins. I do not invest a large amount of money in the coins, but I do try to collect coins that carry a fairly good grade. When I come across a bargain I will usually buy it, and add it to my collection. I enjoy the feel of holding history in my hand, thinking about where the piece has been, what may have been happening duiring that specific time period. This particular piece is known as a Flying Eagle. It is a one cent piece minted from 1856- 1858. During this particualr year, they minted approxiamtely 17.4 million coins. During 1858 they minted approxiamtely 24.6 million coins. During 1856, the first year for this coin., they only minted approxiamtely 2000 coins. The lower the mintage, the more valuable the coin. Unfortunatley I do not have any from that year. Even in fair condition, that 1856 coin could be worth approximately $6,000. I am still looking for one. Coin collecting can be a lot of fun, and it can be a relatively cheap hobby to enjoy.
It's amazing how coins - as well as other objects that hold history like that - are so much sought after these days. It really is a great industry.
Being a book collector, I often find great books worth a lot of money at markets an the people who are selling them don't have a clue how much they are worth; the best thing to do is to try and wear a poker face and just buy them at the price which they're selling them at and walk away know I've scored a great deal on an expensive book.
Very cool theme shot and hobby, Rick! I love your story about the history of this coin. The very first story I ever wrote (in fourth grade) was of a penny and all the hands and lives it touched. I completely forgot about that until I read your story.
What a beautiful coin! The history is great too. It's so interesting that something which started out as the lowest denomination in our currency, now can run as much as $6,000. I don't know how that happens, but whether yours is from 1856 or 1857, it doesn't take away from it beauty to me. Nice shot Rick- I really love the detail.
cool collection! I love collecting stuffs mostly stamps and other collectibles. I find this coin collection really interesting and hard to collect too. Great theme shot btw!
Love this Rick. You are holding history in your hands. I used to collect coins. They are stashed away somewhere and I very rarely look at them. I have never seen any coin as old as that one.
Nice looking coin. One of my brothers collected coins and had his coins in plastic cases so that the oils from our skin did not destroy the coin. Do you put your coins in cases?
Beautiful coin! Boy, if it could only talk! You captured it beautifully. The nice thing about collecting coins is that they don't take up alot of space!
I love things that have a long history. coins are one of them. Thinking all they have "seen", all the places and people that came in contact with them. Love the story and the shot :))
That's cool. My brother inherited my grandfathers coin collection. I don't know what is in it or how much its "worth" but it's something that he loves taking out and looking at from time to time.
Very cool coin and history on it. I have a silver dollar bill and a buffalo nickle that I'm proud to have, not sure they are worth much. Just the hobby and history of it makes it enjoyable for sure. I love that you shot this in your hand :-)
Hey Rick! Thanks for the recent comments. I collected coins as a kid (mostly pennies) and I remember going to the bank and getting $20 in penny rolls and searching through them all hoping to get the 1909-S VDB :). Seeing this brought back some good memories. Oh, and the little dude is doing well. Definitely keeping us busy!

Our 1930 penny is worth thousands here if you can find one. We are always on the look out for one in old shops.
