Frost

February 17th, 2010
Here's the photo I added today, but I have a feeling that I'm not really as happy with it as I thought I was when I took it. I tihnk it's because such a large area is out of focus, but I know that's what tends to happen if you use the macro setting, as I did. Any suggestions for improvements please?

Thanks for any help. Also, any feedback on other photos in my project would be appreciated - just comment in the boxes. :-)

Rachel, I think it is a lovely image. I did "borrow" it, and altered it to my taste (which is not always someone else's taste). I liked the depth of field personally that you shot, as it provides dimension. I don't know what you were looking for. I defogged it a little, which adds contrast, and removes haze. Try it. It adds dimension!

Hi Rachael!

overall I think the photo is beautiful. Nice DoF and subject matter.

For myself personally, it seems as if the focus is on the blank space between the leaves. Maybe if it was more focused on the leaf on top, it might seem less "out of focus".
However! Doing that could potentially leave you with less details on the frost (which, of course, is the main star of the photo).

(and I also understand that sometimes you don't always have control over what a camera can macro focus on).

But still, I think it's a pretty good photo.

Happy shooting!

Thanks for the suggestions. I shall try them next time it's frosty.

Chris Ross, what did you use to defog the photo? I can't seem to find that feature on the software I have.

I use a filter software called Tiffen DFX. It is similar to changing the gamma and contrast. That's all. Try that!
