Need some help brainstorming

July 30th, 2010
I was approached by one of my friends who will pay me to take some pictures of her kids but I need help with some ideas for pictures and where to go; and for those of you who live in the sacramento area of California where would some good places be.The cheaper the better as budget is limited to non existent for me. And is near dusk and near dawn time the best time for pictures outdoors right? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

Just have fun with it. When ever we have a photographer come to take our pictures she says to act like she is not even there and then she just snaps when we look cute. Bring them to a park or something, that is always a good setting. Every once in a while just stop and take a family picture. It is easy, just relax and have fun.

I definitely think that around dusk at maybe 7:30 at night would be perfect. That is when I do my photoshoots. That is when the sun is low, bright, and warm....beautiful light!! ...sorry I dont live in California so I can't tell you where exactly to go...but I usually go to a park with swings/bridges/trees/flowers and such.

I used to live in that area, Rachel, and I think William Land Park would be a great area for that. They have FairyTale Town there and the park with all those awesome trees and ponds.

I think you've been given the best advice already - have fun!
Take a ball to kick around, or depending on the age of the kids, bubbles might work - just something to get them running around and laughing.
candids are often more beautiful and show more character than anything too posed...

I don't live in that area, but I'm sure there are some "open to the public" botanical gardens or parks that would provide a beautiful backdrop. Often times horticulture schools will have gardens that are open to the public.

If you're after action shots, find a spot that's secluded from urban life so the background of your photos isn't cluttered with buildings and people (unless that's the look you're going for).

For kids, some place that's kid friendly and where they can run around a little. Try some posed shots, but the best ones will probably be candid ones. For the one who doesn't want to smile, try playing a game of peek-a-boo or something similar and get that candid-having-tons-o-fun smile. :)

As long as you're in "open shade", it doesn't really matter what time of day, although morning and evening light are the best. If you want to start at dusk, start a bit BEFORE dusk - that way you have time to get "warmed up" and get everyone comfortable before the "magical" lighting of dusk begins. Posed and candid are both nice. Spend some time googling "family portrait photographer" and get some ideas. Most of all, have a great time with it!

Thanks for all your advice you have given me some ideas to go with here.

Don't be overly serious about it, take lots of pictures, (bracket) them. and usually some of the best pictures are the candid ones

Sue
beaches are usually a good place to go..lots of activity, birds, colors..as well is any park setting, both are cheap with lots to see and do

I really think some candid photos could look awesome. Like Carol said, bring a ball and just tell them to play with it, and while playing just snap some shots of them throwing it, kicking it, just enjoying it and being a good, You should get some awesome expressions on their faces from that.
