HELP!!!

I have no idea what might be wrong with my CANON SPEEDLITE 270EX...it wasn't dropped and there are batteries but for some reason, it's not working. It was fine last night, but not today. When i go to the camera's flash control menu and click on External flash function setting, it tells me that "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off."

I'm terribly sad =( I know the details I've given is not enough to determine what's wrong with it....but maybe one of you has had a similar experience. If the same thing has happened to you, what did you do?

Thanks.

(Keeping my fingers crossed that there's nothing wrong with my camera....and that my flash is not dead)

When did you buy it? I had problems with my camera lens(Canon eos 1000d) and took it back to jessops and they gave me a whole new camera (I bought it as a package thing) because it was less than a month old. Keep testing it, maybe leave it overnight and try again tomorrow? Sorry I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I hope it's not broken.

Thanks for the reply, Laura. I bought the external flash almost a year ago =( If something's broken, then I'm hoping it's the flash and not the camera. It's easier (and much less expensive to replace the flash than the camera)

Sometimes static electricity builds up. In the past I ave taken the batteries out of my electronic devices overnight. Put them back in the morning and they work like usual. I'm not saying this migt be your problem, but it couldn't hurt.

I am not going to be much help but my Canon Rebel began giving me trouble after I started using a new Vivitar external flash. Went on numerous forums to get input and followed all instructions on how to correct a problem. Eventually took camera and lens in for repairs where I was told the error message i was getting couldn't be from the flash and that it was only a coincidence that it began after I got the flash. Not sure if it is true or not because I took the camera in on June 11th and still don't have it back. Supposedly it is to be ready tomorrow. We'll see. If you google canon forums you can find numerous places that you could post your question. And I would first try what John said because I have had similar experiences with batteries. Good luck.

ahhh...great! i've finally figured out what went wrong.

the hot shoe's micro switch is broken =( which means, there's nothing to tell the camera that an external flash is mounted. what i did now was push it with a brush's bristle (the micro switch is a 0.5 cm plastic) and the external flash is working now.

my problem now is because the micro switch for the external flash is turned on, my built in flash won't pop out because the camera's telling it an external flash is mounted.

oh well.....i'd rather have the external working than the built-in.

now i know there's nothing wrong with the flash. it's the camera's hot shoe. i don't know how much it takes to have that fixed ( i don't want to play mcgyver and try to fix the hot shoe myself) but my canon's almost 3 years old now and doesn't have warranty anymore.
