Editing advice- help!

August 9th, 2010
Hi everyone,

I have been looking into editing software- because there is a certain look I LOVE about so many peoples pictures on here that I want to try to obtain. I was curious, what people reccommend for editing- what is easy to use, etc. I do not have alot of money right now, but I wanted to research so when the time comes, I will know what to buy.

ANY and ALL help is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Here are two people whom have the 'look' I hope to capture someday in my photos--- a 'light, airy, white' feel to the photos. I could post links to SO many more people that I follow- but its dinner time and the kiddos are calling :)

Let me piggyback on your question. I find http://www.picnik.com/ with the paid subscription is great for most effects. I did want some additional frame choices and got a good price on PS Elements for Mac BUT I can't find any option for borders or frames. I bought the current version and updated it but I see nothing in topics about how to add frames. Can any one help me with this?

Since I am new to editing software I didn't want to spend much money at all. I tried out picnik.com at a 365 friend's suggestion and I love it. It is only about $25 annually to upgrade to the premium package. There are so many effects that it is keeping me quite busy and happy with the results.

@ Allison ... Elements menu on the right, where it says edit, create, and share (the colored tabs) under that make sure you are on "full" then under that the little pick with the fx will show you all the available borders, filters, and effects. You will need to create a new layer for some of them to work. Those are the ones I know of off the top of my head, and I think some people create their own using the tools available.

@ Sarah, try shooting in raw and adjusting the image before converting it to jpeg. They may also be using some filters, but I can't tell. Another thing you could do is hit their details link and try to replicate the settings on your camera and see what you get. Or, ask them.

If you are using Elements or photoshop, there is a very talented lady who sells actions. Here's the link

You do have to pay for them, but I just love her work. Also her actions can be adjusted to your own taste

I only use Picnik too--I haven't the patience for PhotoShop (which I also have, but don't use because I find it frustrating).

I get lost in PhotoShop; it's so technical. I use Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite. It's a few years old but it does what I want it to do. I have been using the picnik that we have access to if you're an ACE member. Most days though I tend to post my pictures SOOC. I'm still learning composition, lighting, and just how to use the camera so I tend to leave the editing for when something just didn't turn out right. If you look through my pictures, you'll see that when I do edit, it's usually just cropping or flash adjustment.

Photoshop Elements. There are some very simple things you can do to enhance your images that way.

Lightroom for me. I've done photoshop and while its good, its overkill for me. Photoshop is more for graphic designers and lightroom for photographers. I recommend downloading a trial of lightroom 3 and go from there
