My sister's husband once asked me why I was taking a photo of a magnet on his fridge and I started telling him about the project, to which he replied with, "so what do you win?" -_-
@ Dorrena: clever :) I wouldn't have the nuts to though in case they asked to see it :(
@ Annie: That made me laugh out loud :)
I always feel stupid taking pictures of fences and padlocks and various other things I find aesthetically pleasing... and all because other people don't understand :(
Aww, don't let anyone else stop you from enjoying your surroundings. When I moved away from my parents at eighteen (big jump from South Africa to Cyprus) I was soooo excited to be on my own, especially here because it's so different from what I was used to. I would walk EVERYWHERE and take photos of anything I liked, be it the clear sea or just the trees on the sidewalk. I oftentimes had people shoot me dirty looks as though I was an outsider / foreigner / tourist or just some noob who'd never seen a tree before. But once you learn to block that out, you'll surprise yourself!
Of course I don't practice what I preach and still feel awkward taking photos around people ._.
:') if I had the option of possibly getting arrested that would be a fave xD
@ Annie: wow cyprus! sounds lovely! Though that said SA would be amazing too! >< Wish I could visit both Cyprus and SA! Thankfully I have my fella to look like a loser with me :P
I just love art and have a passion to express myself through visual media. Photography is just one of several avenues that I choose to express myself and my creativity.
I can't do much else that is considered 'creative' so photography is how I express myself artistically. We each see things so differently, even if we are looking at the same thing.
I enjoy it :) I want to share the beauty and creativity most seem to pass by. I want to bring out the simple things in life to show people what they have been missing.
I actually answer differently based on my impression of the person asking. I know that sounds horrible, but most people that ask that question are fairly closed minded and not creative and don't think things outside of mainstream or things that don't generate immediate tangible profit are worthwhile. Those people are usually past understanding. sigh.
I answer in varying truths and stretches of white lies depending on my mood. Basically the real answer "because I WANT to" doesn't seem to go over well. Duh.
I have never had anyone ask me that question anywhere we have been so far be it a 'western' or an 'eastern' country or in our home country, NZ...in fact here- Cambodia, where we live- I do get asked every five minutes whether I want a tuk tuk and even if I pesah khmer tic tic (speak the little khmer I know) they still dont get that I live here, have a car and really truely just want to walk...:) Maybe I just look like a perpetual tourist!
It does make me smile though when Cambodians adopt the position I just took a photo from trying to work out what on earth I was shooting...they prefer photos where people are posing in front of a landmark...straight on...often with fingers in the peace position and think the angles and perspective I often shoot at is just weird.
most times i just laugh and then show them the photo on my little screen and point out that many things are really interesting if we take the time to look. it is sad to realize how some uncreative people treat creative people - like we are too weird to live and breathe. oh well ... i'm finally to the point where i am secure enough to understand that, deal with it and go happily on my own way most of the time. although i have to admit, it would be nice if my mother could understand all of that. lol.
Your answers are all really inspiring :) I think I'll have to go more along all of your lines :P
Though @ Valeria: when I responded with "why not?" last time the people tried to start a fight with me >
because I want to be a better photographer. well, that's what I said at the beginning. Now I lean more towards, because I'm amazed at what I was missing in this world before I began thinking with my camera. every little thing is so much more interesting now.
Because I like the way I feel inside when I am creating a beautiful photograph, it brings me JOY!
It is a way of seeing something that everyone else sees but you can change the way it is seen with your f:stops and shutterspeed adjustments to make it art.

I also use people as a crutch so I don't feel weird :/

Yeah, I'd probably just say something silly... I've never actually been asked that, though!

Gets them thinking, for sure!
