Help with senior portrait

I am planning to do my son's senior portrait as I just cannot afford to have them done professionally. A couple of his friends have asked me to do theirs as well. Now the pressure is on. Any advice for me? Any books, websites, tips would be greatly appreciated.

do lots of tester shots with different lighting to make sure its right. and have fun with it, so they feel comfortable and happy!
