Yes me too, I have just seen on the news how serious the treat of flood & destruction could be all along the East Coast....our thoughts are with you all.
Thanks for your wishes, Judith! We're just beginning to feel the fringes of the storm now - the worst should arrive tomorrow. The state of Massachusetts has been virtually shut down. Schools and state offices are closed tomorrow - the private sector had been urged to do the same. Widespread power outages are expected - some lasting for several days! I hope we all stay warm, dry, and safe.
Very thoughtful thread, Judith. I am also wishing everyone on the east coast to be safe. I live in Pennsylvania but live far enough in that we will probably not get hit with the worst of Hurricane Sandy. I hope that is true.
It's supposed to hit us (in Rhode Island) tomorrow afternoon and evening. National Grid is already telling us to prepare for upwards of 72-hours without power. Interestingly enough, they've declared a state of emergency in Rhode Island, but we still have to report to work! Should be an interesting day.
@judithg thanks Judith et al! We know we'll probably lose power and are preparing for that with water and candles and flashlights. Thankfully we are not on the coast, but we could see some flooding because of the heavy rains. I know everyone appreciates the positive thoughts and well wishes. I too hope there is as little damage as possible and no lost lives.
Thx Judith - I plan on being at the top of the Empire State Building during the eye of the storm to get some shots to make the pop page! NOT hahahaha. They are even evacuating lower Manhattan! You would think a zombie apocolypse is coming or something. We get the most boring weather here so should be interesting. Thx again :-D
@judithg Thank you for your thoughts! I'm in Upstate New York and I'm going to try to take as many pictures as possible to document this storm. Without risking my camera and life of course. ;) It will be much worse down by the city, but where I live we are close to the rivers and hurricane Irene caused devastating flooding so hopefully this won't be as bad as they're saying!
@judithg@fueast@happypat@judithdeacon Thank you all!!! The news is not good and we just heard (9 pm, Sunday) that the Federal and D.C. government offices will be closed tomorrow. Private sector will likely do the same. We are planning on sleeping downstairs tonight as we have two enormous old trees that loom over our house, one of them directly over our bedroom. The rain has started. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the good wishes - xoxoxo
Sending good thoughts to our neighbors to the North. We were just brushed by the outer bands of the storm here in North Carolina...but I think the NE states could be in for a big blow. Hold on and be safe!
Stay safe everyone. Everyone further inland also. This storm is huge.
@mittens I would be prepared for anything. Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast with winds of 110 miles per hour. It was still generating winds of 90 miles per hour when it hit Kentucky. Thats almost 1000 miles. We didn't get our power back for 10 days. My sister in Dayton also had no power for 10 days and she had people in their area that did not get power back for 6 weeks.
Be safe everyone. Hope you have batteries for your flashlights. If you don't have enough bottled water, fill pitchers all the plastic containers you can--and even fill your bathtub. (When we didn't have power and were on a pump you had to use water to flush your toilets--water in the tub works well for that)
I live on the fringes (DC/Baltimore area), but I'm thinking of my sister in tidewater Virginia, my daughter, her husband, and my brother in New York where a Northeaster and Sandy combined add up to a real mess. Many friends in NYC and a few in coastal North Carolina also. Stay dry and safe, folks!
We're following the progression of the storm on the internet and hope that everyone in it's path is well prepared and that the outcome isn't as severe as expected. Toronto is also going to be affected and I prayed that my daughter who was suppose to come home last night from a cruise would first of all make it into Port Canaveral and then from Orlando
to Toronto. my prayers were answered. her words were: if we survived the ordeal on board ship last night we'll survive the rest of the storm as well. apparently it felt like the cruise ship was splitting in half in the storm.. today lots of planes are being cancelled at Toronto's International Airport
Thanks! We are going to get hit. Hopefully it isn't too bad. When a storm hit this same time last year we were without power for 8 days! It is tough on the kids. Will try to take and post some photos.
Here in western PA it is raining now although the worst of the storm is farther east. I hear the eye hasn't hit the coast yet.
I went to a doctor's appointment this morning and saw two roads closed on the way. One I know was due to a tree that uprooted and fell across the road with power lines under it. The soil is so moist and with the winds getting higher later today, there is concern of trees tipping over onto power lines and also concern about flash flooding.
It's windy and raining. The prediction is for it to get worse as the afternoon progresses.
Everything is pretty much shut down, but I did get my mail delivery at 11 am. Usually, he comes around 4 pm. But he said that he was delivering where he could get to the doors or roadside boxes in his truck. Then, he was going home.
@meisen325 One of my best friends has a beautiful house on the shores of the creek in Annapolis - surrounded by huge trees. I'm hoping they retreat to her offices in town but she's pretty crazy. We're all watching with baited breath and everything crossed here.
Report from Guilford, CT. Our town docks and restaurants are already flooded out. CT highways are closed and anyone living directly on the coast has been evacuated. The eye of the hurricane will miss us, but the storm surge and high tides will do the damage. Here, just rainy and high winds, and we still have power for now.
A giant crane I see everyday from my office window is now dangling by a thread 65 stories up above midtown Manhattan. Now how dumb that they didnt think to remove it days ago!
@btorrey Yes, Seven Spring seems to be getting hit pretty hard being up in the mountains.
Here where I live in western PA the winds have died down some but it is still raining pretty hard. I haven't lost electricity which i"m very happy about.
I hope other people effected by the storm are keeping safe and warm. There is a lot of devastation showing on the news.
Thanks for thinking of us! I'm just north of New York City in the heart of Westchester county, and my town seems to have fared pretty well. However a lot of the coastal areas in the next towns over sustained significant damage from flooding.
@judithg Thanks so very much for your kind and postive thoughts Judith. I live in CT, it's the morning after, and kitty and I are safe, after an absolutely harrowing day and night. Thanks again, Les
@judithg By the way, they are calling this "The Super Storm"; it was a rare "hybrid hurricane/storm. It is epic in its size; still active from southern Virginia to northen Maine, and west to Ohio and Kentucky. NYC subways are all shut down, and will be for days; some are actually flooded. Currently (9:30 am) it is snowing in 7 states with blizzard conditions in the mountains. The East Coast is devasted, as a storm surge of 14 ft. and more roared inland from New Jersey (where the hurricane made landfall) up to Mass. Here in Conn. the timing couldn't have been worse: The storm surge hit at high tide with a full moon; the flooding is epic. Another horrble result are the home fires caused by blown tranformers and downed power lines. 80-95 mph wind gusts caused the existing fires to leap to other homes and cottages. In most instances, firefighters were helpless because either they could not gain access due to flooding, or the winds were to dangerous to be out in.
However, as widespread as the hurricane is, and with the extensive, crippling damage, the number of lives lost has been blessedly few, (so far about 20) but the loss of even a single life is tragic.
I have seen time and again how crises such as this bring out the best in most people; I'm sure I'll see it again.
Thanks for all your prayers, postive thoughts, energy, white light, etc. that you are sending to us; it all reaches us, and helps us. Les
@glimpses It was stressful from this side of the Atlantic worrying about friends - a complete nightmare to be in it I'm sure. Any thoughts on Annapolis? My very good friends have a lovely house there right in the creek. I heard from them yesterday but nothing yet today so they could be without power.
@judithg Thought I'd pop by and add my good wishes for all our friends on the East coast. Terrible scenes on the live BBC feed. Thinking of you all @michaelelliott your dangling crane even got mentioned on the BBC! The mayor said it would be some time til it was sorted...so plenty of time for a photo or two!! Take care x
@judithg Judith, I know nothing specific about Annopolis, but you may be able to find something out on our national weather site: www.NOAA.org. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. I checked it out, and there are 12 counties listed when you type in Annapolis. You can find all kinds of data there. I hope this is in some way helpful, and that your good friends met with no harm. Take care, Les
Wishing everyone in the zone, a safe and quick passage of the storm - be prepared with fully charged computers and cell phones.

@judithg Thank you Judith.
Rain is getting heavier here.
I hope everyone on the coast are doing ok.
