Organizing images on hard drive

September 7th, 2010
My image folders on my hard drive are a complete mess. I have several thousands of images in my computer and they are so disorganized I can hardly find what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of any software that will organize my images by date? I'm not talking about Picasa, that organizes images in the picasa database, not on the hard drive. I really need to get these in order and there are just too many to do individually. Any advise?

At the very least, you should be able to set your Operating System to display contents of a window in date order, so whether using Windows or Applemac, double clicking your image folder should display in date order. However, I find the lack of easy image previews when sorting this way rather unhelpful.

If you have Photoshop CS3 or 4 (and presumably 5) you can use the program called Bridge if you installed it. In the menu bar, look under View/sort and you will see many ways, including "by date", to sort your images.
I would hazard a guess that Photoshop Elements may also have some functionality of this type.
If you have money to spend, get a copy of Adobe Lightroom, which you will end up using for a lot more than sorting (though a data base is involved).

Do consider some kind of organizational structure that makes sense to you. Some people do year/month folders, other might do year/named folder for each event etc. As long as you get into a habit of "filing" your images at the time you transfer them to the computer, you will always be ahead of the game.

Given the cheap cost of external hard drives now, and your recent near disastrous data loss, you may also wish to consider running 2 hard drives for an element of security.

Happy sorting!
