Processing Software

September 24th, 2010
First of all- thanks to those who helped me out in making some suggestions for a new computer- having that information (and a sales associate who was very interested in photography) helped a lot!

I went with an iMac. But while I was in there, the sales associate was talking about Lightroom, Aperture, and Photoshop.

I have to buy new editing software now anyway, since I've moved away from the PC world. I was just wondering- do you have any preferences on the software? If so, why?

I googled this information and from what I gather, it seems that Photoshop is still the preferred software for extensive editing, but that Aperture is very good at more basic editing and much better for organizing photos. And Lightroom seems to fall somewhere in between?

Any opinions/thoughts? Thanks!!

I think it depends on what you are planning on doing. I've noticed a lot of people use Lightroom in addition to PS. Personally, I just use Elements, and have found that to be sufficient at this time. (I don't do graphics and such. Plus it was a better price point and learning curve, although I still had to buy a book to learn to make it do some of the things that PS can do.)

Why limit yourself to just one? I use all of the aforementioned plus a few more, myself. Each one has their pros and cons, just remember the pros of each and run them through them as you need.

"Why limit yourself to just one?"

Err, money? They're not cheap, y'know, these software packages... :/

Perhaps Andrew is a fan of extended trial versions. Wink wink.

Lightroom is the best for photography (it's especially designed for that)

I use Gimp, if that doesn't confues matters more. It's free. :-)

I have Lightroom 3, which I do find to be very good, I've downloaded Elements 9 to trial, and use Picnik which I love it is so easy to use.
I trialed aperture and didn't like it, finding it quite 'clunky' and difficult to navigate same with gimp not a fan.
It will really be down to personal preference, I trial them all and decide from there

And welcome the Mac club, best thing I did kicking PC's in to touch

Thanks so much for the insight! Yeah, I will eventually try them all- but I thought there might be a clear cut winner - but it seems like it just comes down to personal preference. @ griff though- I love the Picnik. It actually has made me delay in learning photoshop better.

Oh, and thus far I'm loving the mac. I got frustrated in the beginning because I was slow in navigating, but when I realized it was actually just more intuitive I have definitely started to come around!

I have a MacBook, so well done on the Mac choice!

I use Lightroom as my photo organiser and some very basic editing and I love, love, love, love it. I bought it on a whim in my dying days of a student discount and I have not regretted it for a minute. I also have photoshop, but it takes a lot of learning to use, but it is seamless with Lightroom so that makes it easy.

I've used both photoshop and lightroom and can echo the comments above. Photoshop is more suited towards graphic designers whereas lightroom is more for photographers. Since i've got lightroom, I havent used photoshop, so that may give you a hint :)
