What is your photomode?

January 8th, 2019
I take a lot of pictures from my car because I have balance issues and because when it is snowy or icy not safe always to get out of car. I have decided to label these shots carphoto. My other most used mode is beachwalk. I am labeling these for a couple of reasons one so I can look before I post to see if I have anything too similar and another just to see how many I take in these two modes. What mode do you use and are you will to tag and share. I know a lot of you hike.

Here are the photos I went back to the beginning of December and tagged with carphoto.

That is so interesting, Joan. I also take a lot of pictures from my car due to some mobility and balance issues, too.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think of giving up photography but I don't want to do that so I keep hanging in there and do what I can.

@joansmor @mittens Like both you ladies - mobility is a great problem for me also , hence a lot of my photography is within my own garden , through the Kitchen window or from the car -- Ooh how I wish to roam the countryside freely to take some photos !But we all must do what we possibly can !

Very interesting. I take a lot of images from withing 100' or so from my car, including some from inside.

I also take lots of photos on lunchtime walks. I know that noon is usually terrible lighting, but with a full time job, I take what I can get.

I haven't tagged them, maybe I should?

I don't get outside enough with my camera and do far too may indoor shots. Aim for 2019 is to learn landscape and B&W (thought I could combine them>) so I might be doing more from the car!!

This is a fascinating discussion, thank you @joansmor Some people, like yourself, have mobility issues all the time and some - through illness or circumstances - have it for a season.

I normally go outdoors to take photos and carry my camera with me but right now, I am unable because of my husband's recent skiing accident and being down with a virus myself, so I am having to learn to take photos indoors more and that is proving a challenge. I find the light harder to manage indoors. Just out of interest, do you wind the window down most of the time to take a photo or take it through the window glass or windscreen? I have often tried the latter but never had good results because of reflections and the glass reducing sharpness. Interesting to hear how you do it.

I think photography is always a very individual record of a life and of your perspective on it. If that includes shooting from a car or out of a window, then that is a true reflection of your view on the world. I like that.

It would have to be commute mode for me! I spend a couple of hours a day driving so once the days get a bit longer mostly of my shots will be in this mode!

@mittens @joansmor @beryl This last two years I have been having mobility issues I find my Rollater (granny pusher) with 4 wheels and a seat on it very useful for outdoor photos. My camera bag sits on the seat and my lens bag in the basket under the seat. If I need to sit down for a while I also have the seat to sit on to recover and it is quite robust to go over grass and gravel .It gets me about and holds me up to help me enjoy my photography and I have no heavy bags to carry on my shoulder
January 8th, 2019
@beryl I always loved hiking and walking in the woods and like you I miss being able to do that now. I feel so limited on the angles and shots I can get now.
January 8th, 2019
@mittens Will you use the tag carphoto on the ones from the car so I can look them up. Like to see what you get for pictures in this mode.
January 8th, 2019
@beryl The mobility became big issue when I was going through radiation and have never really seemed to get things totally back. But we preserve I hope you will use the tag carphoto so I can see what you get.
January 8th, 2019
@lsquared Beach walks are sometimes in bright sun. But you can find ways to deal. Hope you will use a tag like lunchmode so I can see what you do.
January 8th, 2019
@30pics4jackiesdiamond I struggle with inside photos but you do an amazing shot. The best trick with landscape is to look through your finder and see the picture that is there and not what you see before you look through the finder. Also find something a tad interesting like a naked tree.
January 8th, 2019
@casablanca I have trouble with indoor shots too. I open my window most of the time even in the freezing cold. Sometime when it is cloudy you can get a good shot without opening the window. Usually I do this when something is in front of the car.
January 8th, 2019
@rjb71 I take pictures on my wat to work sometimes too. I take my tablet for that so I don't risk leaving my camera at work since I work MWF. Do you commute in a car or a train or what.
January 8th, 2019
Great discussion Joan! I had never thought about tagging pictures with the location from which I took them. I guess one of mine would be "through the sliding glass doors" as you know I get most of my bird shots from there. I'll have to pay more attention to that this year- and if I shoot from the car, I'll add your tag too.
January 8th, 2019
@wendyfrost I think the day will come when I will need one of those so nice to know I can still keep taking pictures. You should come up with a tag for this and let us know.
January 8th, 2019
@olivetreeann I hope you will. I was worried you hadn't posted. I mailed you a little something. You and Ashley. She got hers so I hope your will arrive.
January 8th, 2019
Oh wow so good to Im in fab company in both taking photos from car and having balance issues I like your idea Joan Thanking you xx

In years of working for the newspaper, schlepping a lot of gear, climbing fences and formerly being a bicyclist who pushed big gears I have made a mess of my knees. I bought a decent drone with thoughts of it giving me some options for places I can't get to easily, but there are a lot of restrictions where I am allowed to fly it in the United States.
January 9th, 2019
@joansmor Interesting idea to tag photos with "carphoto" Joan. Maybe I can do that with some in the future if I remember to. It would be really nice if some others would be willing to do that, too.
January 9th, 2019
@joansmor Lunchmode it is. I've tagged a couple of recent photos, including from today... https://365project.org/tags/lunchmode

Add me as someone who is having to relearn how to live with reduced mobility. I the beginning of a diagnosis of something called IBM, the disease, not the company, but basically a non fatal, type of muscular dystrophy that progresses similarly to ALS. So hoping I have something which is actually treatable, but whatever, having to take pictures from the car is certainly part of my condition.

There is an art to dealing with rain on the windshield or reflections that can be fun however.

I wish you the best with your endeavour to pursue this project. Glare is a bummer, best to wind window down, although front window views are often interesting when you get a bit of the car interior into the shot. The mirrors often give you interesting shots to. I can relate to having limited mobility issues, but i am fine now. I take a lot of beach / coastal shots, shots while hiking, shots around our local man built lake, birds and abstracts. It's what I have on offer usually.
January 9th, 2019
@joansmor what a z brilliant tip, thanks joan 🤗
January 9th, 2019
@lsquared Wow I love those - going to follow you and watch for lunchmode.
January 9th, 2019
@pandorasecho Sorry for your health issues but you get some great pictures of children (grandkids?). I have a friend that uses photography to distract her from her 24/7 pain issues.
January 9th, 2019
@lsquared Going to do a follow love your lunchmode
January 9th, 2019
@sugarmuser Part of the reason for doing this thread is to offer options to those who have limited mobility or limited access. You can find a way. This wonderful community will support you.
January 9th, 2019
Now I have to issue a warning - stop pull off the road in a safe spot and don't try on a busy road.
January 9th, 2019
Mine would be all over the place. Some days I get to venture out and do light hiking to get photos, not so much this time of the year since I'm not a fan of the cold and it's pretty chilly here right now. I guess some of mine could be tagged as mom-mode since I'm always snapping the cute and silly things my kids do, so always trying to take a picture with a toddler tugging on my pants.
January 9th, 2019
I never thought of tagging my photos with where or when I took them (although I am rarely in a car). I might do that for example lunchmode etc. I do have some balance issues which just strikes all of a sudden (although when in parks I usually walk at this time of year as it can be slippy).
January 9th, 2019
@joansmor by car so I take regular diversions such as this mornings!
January 9th, 2019
@la_photographic I often say getting old is not for the faint of heart.
January 9th, 2019
@kymmisue Oh that would be fun
January 10th, 2019
@joansmor I do remember finally getting out for a drive to take some photos after I broke my foot a few years ago, and how different it felt to work making the shot from my seat, not able to move here or there....it's a different challenge. I no longer get down on the ground to take low shots, but mostly I'm so busy that I grab quick shots with my phone...so they are quick, not well composed, and without much depth of field. So, yes...the "mode" does make a difference! Very interesting.
January 10th, 2019
@joansmor This one, for example, was both "carphoto" and a quick cellphone shot. https://365project.org/houser934/365/2018-11-20

I'm in a wheelchair since being born disabled. Like some others here, getting out and about is hard so I do almost all my photos from inside my home. During the spring/summer months I'm able to shoot through a glass door that leads to my backyard and photograph birds. During the winter months I'm a loss for what to photograph, so I do a lot of ill attempts at still life and "object" photos.
January 10th, 2019
Hi, what an interesting discussion!
I thought I'd chip in with some of the tags I use.
I often tag my photos from the point where I take them - here are two examples I use regularly. :
View from my lounge http://365project.org/tags/view%20from%20my%20lounge
Where I stand http://365project.org/tags/das-where-i-stand

As you say, they are useful to come back to later, but I also use mine to tag an ongoing series over the years.

It's been so interesting reading about members of this community and some of the limitations we share! Splitting my year between two such different locations, I'm on photo overload when we're in Nova Scotia. Coming back to Southern California, you'd think the choices would be endless, but I'm no longer comfortable driving out here and the traffic creates its own limitations. That leaves me a lot of time taking pictures of the animals I encourage to come to my back yard! I've used the tag "Peaceable Kingdom" for a number of years, but my challenge is to try not to become tedious. Interesting topic, Joan...it's made me appreciate what I've been doing now for so long!
January 10th, 2019
I have mobility problems, too.I usually go out with my rollator, which is handy as it has a basket to put my cameras in,It also has a seat so I can rest when I need to.
January 10th, 2019
I have to drive places to get anything like a good scenery where I live, but once I'm there it's all about putting one foot in front of the other for me. I love a good walk, would love the time to hike more too. Hoping to do that a lot more this year :)
January 10th, 2019
@mej2011 I hate photographing inside but realizing that winter is going to pose more problems as I get older. I am working with a camera club and for winter I am coming up with some ideas to try. Today we are going to do refractions.
January 10th, 2019
@dibzgreasley I am doing a photo scrapbook this year using only pictures from my photorides. Most of these will be shot from my car. If I fall behind as I enviably it will be good to look up my tag and find the days I did photo rides.
January 10th, 2019
@Weezilou I am teaching a camera club. Today we are doing refractions that could be interesting to try and you are so creative. I also ordered a portrait light kit from Amazon and we will learn to use it together.
January 10th, 2019
@paul10 I do love your photos.
January 10th, 2019
@carolmw I am encouraged that a couple of you have mention rollators giving me encourage should my life take that turn.
January 11th, 2019
I like to hike in the woods or walk around town when the weather is decent. Otherwise, I take random shots of things I find inside my house or other buildings. Yoga has helped me be more able to prop and steady myself to take better macro shots. I have a bunch of "techniques" I use to steady myself, some rather ridiculous looking. :)
