Montana/Wyoming

Finally taking a trip to the west! Flying into Salt Lake City because I got a non-stop flight there. Then driving to Glacier National Park, which is a 9+ hour drive. Have plenty of time to stop along the way. Anything to check out between SLC and Glacier (west side)?
Any must sees in Glacier? I have about 2 days. No long hikes because I am not equipped! Could be a mile out. Unless you tell me what to do to be safe. It'll be late September/early October.
Then, onto Yellowstone for a few days. Anything in those drives between would be appreciated! I have never been to these states.

I loved Lake McDonald (take the boat trip around it) and Bowman Lake (on the west side and beautiful), and the main road up (driving) which will have little trails off it. Just a thought...there is a ton to see in Yellowstone and in Glacier alone. If you only have a few days in each, you won't be able to cover even a tiny amount of the parks. You might want to focus on those two and not try to fit in more things along the way. Of course, the Grand Tetons are amazing as well -- but that would mean going through Wyoming. Whitefish is a cute mountain town. There are folks on this site who live near Glacier and probably will have a lot to add. I lived in Salt Lake City for awhile but long ago. There's a lot to see there as well and wonderful canyons -- Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and Mill Creek. Plus the Great Salt Lake. You're going to be in a beautiful area!

@taffy Thanks for the terrific information. I agree that a few days each isn't "enough". We are meeting up with our son in Yellowstone and then they head east. I notoriously like to meander when I drive. Wanted to split the 9+ hour drive into 2 days, but that gets us outside Glacier by mid-day. We then have the next two full days. The following day, we have to be in Jackson, WY by later in the day (8 hr drive). I know it's a lot of miles. Trying to map everything out ahead of time. The Going to the Sun Road may be partially closed when we are there, so will need to go around to get to the east side.

Hi Danette, As you know I just spent a few days in Jackson and the Tetons. I did the loop drive in Tetons and a couple of smaller hikes -- Jenny Lake and Swan/Heron Lakes. Lots of great wildlife spotting!

Tag @Karly - she showed me the greatest places at Glacier last September - perfect time to enjoy it.

My favorite was McDonald lake as seen from the little town of Apgar

@milaniet you posted some great shots. I don't think we will get up in the northern reaches. I did leave a message for @karly on one of her photos. She hasn't been on as much.

Jealous! Montana and Wyoming are so beautiful. Be prepared for cooler temps (will probably seem downright cold to you). My hubby and boys had snow in MN and CO in June in higher elevations. And we had snow in Yellowstone in August when we were there several years ago.

@homeschoolmom It's a challenge to plan all this out! We are "expecting" temps between 30-50's, but that can sometimes be colder than it seems. In Charlotte last winter, it was in the low 20's (feeling like 17) and I was ill prepared. I am definitely looking forward to seeing 4 states I haven't seen!
