Short listing for voting in Challenges

January 4th, 2020
Hi Team, I may be on my own on this and so be it!!
Often in challenges we submit several images and this is awesome.
I'm not so sure though IMHO is when the challenge host selects for voting more than one image per individual e.g. 2 out of a field of 6 is from one person. I've noticed this a bit recently.
Making a little tough call on brilliant images is part of the job of selecting.
Interested in your thoughts.

I think its an accepted standard to short list only one from each person, and as you say, if there is more than one from an entrant that tough call has to be made. Perhaps you have spotted newbies who are novices at running challenges??

Yes. IMHO ..You are absolutely correct in that only one image per person can be put up for a vote.
That’s they way I always understood it . As Jackie said.... the tough call has to be made .

i agree with @30pics4jackiesdiamond and @mzzhope that this is the best approach - challenging though it may be... i don't know that it's ever been a hard and fast rule - i've seen this situation happen on more than one occasion over the years...

I've haven't encountered that recently but do remember it happening in the past. I only select one photo per photographer when I'm choosing pictures for the vote. I think that is how most people do it. Ditto to all the comments above.

Thanks 😊 for your affirming comments. Def not trying to be the 365 police πŸ™„πŸ˜³ Just a curious observation. Discussion closed 😁

There are times when a host has won for the very first time and may not be aware of all the ins and outs of getting the challenge vote up and running, let alone the unwritten rules of selecting finalists, so I think that we can forgive them when things like this happen!
January 5th, 2020
@brigette I agree with all the above, it has been done with two of my images and I felt sorry for the other participants. I did mention it to the host.

@ludwigsdiana yeah I can imagine it would feel awkward and it’s no reflection on the worthiness of the chosen images
January 5th, 2020
i actually dont have a problem with it, it might feel awkward but we should be voting on images not people LOL

I only short list one per same person. It is hard sometimes and sometimes I am disappointed in the one selected for the shortlist, but it gives more people a chance that way.

I also have only shortlisted one per entrant...but good to see a reminder here anyway.

I've not noticed more than 1 finalist per photographer, but I agree it ought to be discouraged. I think it's fine for poeple to enter multiple times, but each individual should be limited to 1 finalist.

The few times that I've hosted challenges, that's what I do, Step one of judging is to pick the 1 best/favorite for anyone who had more than one entry. Then take the remain pool and select finalists.

To me, the challenges should be fun, and we should be encouraging more people to participate.

Just my $0.02 worth.

i think that it should be up to the host to choose the finalists, and if he/she ends up with two from the same participant, it's his/her challenge, it's his/her rule.

my concern over that is the unfairness to the other participants who make it a point to post an entry, in support of the challenge, especially when there are more than 5 participants. i have hosted quite a fair number of challenges and my personal rule is one per participant. as @shutterbug49 pointed out, it gives more people a chance. and if i get 15 entries from 4 people, i just choose one from each of the 4 thus i would only have 4 to be voted on. but it doesn't have to be that way for everybody. you're the host, it's your call.

@kali66 "we should be voting on images not people" kali, that is the general concept. in my earlier years here, i have been called out (privately through email) by a couple of people who asked me why i didn't vote for their photos when they voted for mine in some other challenges, or that their photos had been on the top ten or had a gazillion faves. and when i replied that i voted for what i thought met all the criteria of the challenge apart from other personal considerations, they unfollowed me. tee-hee!

@summerfield One of the nice things about 365 community (and life in general i guess!!) is the diversity of views! I'm pretty sad (gobsmacked) to hear that you've been called out for your voting preferences - sad man! Thats so not in the spirit of 365.
January 6th, 2020
@summerfield lol sometimes we can take these things way too seriously, i remember how excited i got when i first got into a final...and how disappointed i was to have two photos in a final and thought my vote got split and i lost haha. i mean you can think of it both ways, eg. if someone goes the extra mile and puts in several entries they should be raising their odds like lotto! but in the end all you win is the chance to have the same dilemma in choosing finalists lol

I think we might need to just step back a little - surely the Challenges are just there to allow people to stretch their wings a bit. They allow new members to join into our community and develop their skills and they allow our more experienced members to consider a backup idea or two when their enthusiasm may lag. They really aren't a Competition as such and it's sad if they get so tied up with rules and regulations that it makes it hard for new members to feel comfortable on our site. Can't we just enjoy the entries chosen by the person kind enough to host the event and then congratulate the person chosen to host and manage the next Challenge - with all of its demands. :)

@robz hi Rob, my thoughts behind posting this discussion, was not to get bigger than Texas and tied up in rules and regulations..(although 365 is not without some to be fair!) just a reflection of mindfulness when choosing - and only IMHO! πŸ™„πŸ˜¬πŸ™ƒ

No worries Brigette - I can see what you are saying and I do actually agree with you. However, I felt sorry for the new 365er who hosted the last challenge where a couple of double ups were chosen. The whole process is so complicated the first time you do it and all the unwritten rules are not explained to you. I'm sure most people give it their best shot and will gradually become more aware of the "normal" procedures. I hope you can see where I was coming from and accept my apologies for my unintended criticism.. Regards Rob

I agree very much with one picture only from a poster in the final list. Many including myself tend to take photographs in certain areas; I do tend to focus on Street scenes. During the winter months I spent an amount of time on Photoshop tutorials and during that period entered quite a few in wwyd challenge. So it follows that members will enter challenges in certain areas.
Overall everything should in my opinion be focused on encouraging activity by as many members as possible and I think the one picture per member for the final list supports this.
