Recommendations Needed

Hello 365ers
My sister is travelling from New Zealand to visit us over here in Canada. She is going via Alaska and doing a number of exciting things on the way...Kayaking through the ice bergs, polar bear expodition, halibut fishing...
She has asked me to suggest a camera that she can use to capture this once in a lifetime adventue. I was thinking a bridge camera with a good zoom. She does not want to mess around changing lenses or carrying the extra weight.
What would you suggest. I am looking at Nikon, Sony and Cannon so far.
Thanks so much for your help.

I love my Canon Powershot XS50 HS (the newer ones have a higher number now I think) and that's my go-to camera for my moon shots. Olympus and Sony are giving the "bigger names" a run for their money now too. If she has the ability to do so she should check them out in a store and see what feels good to her. But I'd highly recommend the Canon since that's what I use!

@olivetreeann I was kind of leaning that way even though I'm a Nikon and Sony girl 😁

canon powershot SX50 HS ...i also have this camera and it is extremely versatile, you can go from macro to zoom in seconds, and everything in between, it does RAW if she is into post processing, but she will get more shots on her sd card if she only shoots jpeg, i find the sports thing great for moving subjects but shoot on P most of the time with exposure dialled down a little as i find auto too bright. she can also do video with it, and it has a swivel screen which i find very useful

Will you need to consider waterproof /low temperature operation?

My previous camera was a Nikon P900. The zoom on it is brilliant. I think there are some good deals to be had too as there is now a P1000. Only shoots .jpg though, which is one of the reasons I upgraded to a DSLR

Panasonic LX100 mark ii is what I'd use.

the canon powershot I believe is the big winner. I love mine, and my sister just bought the new sx70 and it's very similar to mine but with some great new additions. easy to use, light and so versatile with the super zoom I need to make my koalas seem like I am right beside the.

oh and the canon shoots raw and/or jpeg :)

If you want a take anywhere, in any conditions, waterproof, sea proof, almost indestructible, but a very capable camera, with a very impressive spec have a look at the Olympus Tough TG-5.
This is small enough to take with you all the time, forget the conditions, just take your photographs or videos.
I've not managed to break mine yet !

One tip, get it as soon as you can before your trip, to learn just how clever it is and what you can do with it.
Having said that, if your sister is a novice photographer, it performs extremely well on Auto.

@markp She is a novice so when we meet up I can teach her a few things on it. I just want her to be able to use it point and shoot until we meet up in Banff. This sounds like a great option for her.

@anniesue I am thinking waterproof is a great idea cause when she is home in New Zealand she fishes from her kayak :) She will be in Alaska in the summer so temperature should not be an issue. A New Zealand winter is not going to be an issue either.

@markp I have the TG4 (the same as the TG5 - just a generation earlier)... it’s small, light, indestructible and shoots RAW... definitely worth looking at for a P&S...
