Topic and Research Question Ideals involving.... Photography and Business, Computers or Ethics..

May 29th, 2021
I'm attempting to brainstorm some topic research ideas that primarily involve photography however, I have to also include either business, computers/technology, or ethics intertwined with the subject of photography...

Does anyone have any good suggestions? I have a couple of so-so ideas I'm considering at the moment... however, I'm not totally sold yet on them to roll forward on my assignment - so thought I'd reach out to individuals that equally enjoy photography and see if ya'll want to share any thoughts.

How about the ethics of street photography?
I would love to read your research paper on that one!

Or... Photo manipulation, the concept of beauty and body positivity

@farmreporter I considered this one! I just think it will be too controversial of a topic to resolve in the limited page number parameters I'm assigned.

@northy I love your spin of beauty and body positivity! I had "is photo manipulation ruining our idea of beauty" and was swaying against using it as I think that topic, in particular, has been done a million times already :P. Thank you for your perspective!

We have an artsy-fartsy gang around here, and sometimes we paint from photos we find stirring here on 365 (with due permission from the owner). I find it interesting to see and analyse the difference in paintings vs. photography. Paintings can never render the exact image. Maybe you can consider a comparison between painting and photography. Or how much of the artist is present in a photography (like how the same subject is rendered by different authors).

@farmreporter has made a good suggestion, I would like to see your research on that subject especially if you could compare two different photographers who have different approaches to the subject. But failing that how about the ethics of digital manipulation of photographs for political purposes?

Also there’s photography and truth in advertising....

or... I also have this vague idea around posting images of others to social media without consent... I don’t mean street photography, but rather photos taken in moments that aren’t public domaine...

Or... copyright in the digital age... I remember some years back someone was scraping images from Instagram, doing a small thing with them and presenting as their own - and I think winning in court...

(and can I just say how fascinated I am by this thread... thanks for posting and let us know what you go with!)

Love your ideas, how about throwing in a plot twist :) - narrowing it down to quantitative research versus a qualitative research topic?

I think the comparison of one subject shot by 2 different photographers might be able to fall into this category... Anything else interesting?

I was considering the emotional effects of black and white vrs color imagery. does the black and white give off certain emotions just based on the lack of color?

Somehow I keep thinking about this! So on the business side of things how about considering the great disparity in pricing of digital cameras especially when you often hear photography "gurus" say it is not the camera but the photographer who takes great photos or even that you can take great photos with any camera. If this is true why, e.g., does a Leica or a Hasselblad cost so much more than a Fujifilm or a Canon?

@allsop That's super interesting!!! I love that it's getting ya'll thinking :) - I really like seeing the different directions this is going as well.

@allsop I totally agree to your idea!

How about purpose of photography. Why is it done (professional/ amateur) how it has evolved ( Fox-Talbot to Photoshop) where's it going (DSLR to phone). May be too qualitative for your needs though?

@30pics4jackiesdiamond The purpose of photography reminds me of this ted talk :) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvTnV3ac8gU
It's a really interesting watch, highly recommend it!

I think you're on to something with emotion in black and white photography. It's still considered art, unlike color (although some would disagree) and there are some photographers that seem to know how to stir emotions in the viewer. Black and white is my first love in photography and it was a 365er that told me over nine years ago that the best photographs are taken by the photographer who has an emotional connection with the subject. Just putting it out there.

How about the ethics of paying street people (especially the homeless) to pose for you? I have heard that some street people are often asked if they can have their photo taken.
This would narrow street photography down into a more detailed subject that has a business angle to it.

I know photo manipulation has been mentioned...ww
When does processing morph into "digital art"...which is a composite? Etc....

Let me throw in the area of 'legality'.

This could include

Copyright ownership issues, perhaps approach from the point of view of 'your rights' and 'where you could step into the rights of others.

Subject issues - model release, legality where persons 'caught in photograph.

Location issues - where can you legally take photographs and where can you legally be prevented from taking photographs.

I am fascinated by the use of colour. How some enhance colour to sharpen an image, how to make a colour pop especially red and use of saturation. On other forums I find personally that some shot are over saturated but the picture is very popular with others and become worthy of winning competitions.
This is so interesting looking at other suggestions and ideas.
Good luck.

One twist could be to look at how a professional photographer, a serious amateur, and a novice look at some of these key issues -- similarities and differences in how they think about each?
