Newbie looking for help and inspiration.

July 20th, 2021
Hi! Well I guess I can't honestly call myself a newbie I've tried 365 a couple of time before but it fizzled out after a couple of months. But I have recommitted myself. I am really passionate about my photography and I want to learn and increase my skills, to improve in my craft. So I am posting here and asking if there is anybody who would be willing to follow me. I am open to constructive criticism as I want to really grow. I shoot mostly nature and wildlife. I would love to also follow others back to have additional inspiration, and I enjoy viewing all genres. If this is an inappropriate post I apologize. Have a good day everybody!

Welcome back Teri.

I found the best way to have followers was to follow people, who then followed back. You could look under BROWSE and find WHO TO FOLLOW and the site suggests popular and skilled photographers.

For inspiration look on the DISCUSS header, find the GENERAL thread and find the SH*T list. This shows all of the challenges and themes currently open, but if you participate, the downside is if you win you host the next challenge for shortlisting and voting- but you can not tag the photos and be a 'guerilla participant'.

The words of the month is an excellent resource, the get-pushed-challenges can help gain confidence and skills (and followers).

In the BLOGGED section Ross has a number of links to articles on how to keep motivated, and he explains the mechanics of the site which makes for interesting browsing.

Wishing you luck, take it a day at a time, don't expect every day to be for a masterpiece, most times done is better than perfect. J

I would add one thing to Jackie’s great advice. If you follow theDarkroom, we have a theme every other week that isn’t voted on so you can tag the theme without worrying about having to host.

Hi Teri, happy to follow you! I am no expert but always happy to learn as I go. Welcome back. Lots of ideas above from Jackie to help you get stuck in.

There are many things you can do to keep yourself inspired here on 365 but don't worry if you hit times where the "phojo" is low. We all go through it. For me the road back to inspiration usually begins with playing around in my photo processing program. I also like some of the challenges on here that use a little more creativity to accomplish- like the Album Cover Challenger, What Would You Do? (aka wwyd), the Tag Challenge and the Composite Challenge. The word of the month list is good too. In general, I find that mixing things up a bit helps as well. Have I been shooting a lot in color? Then switch to black and white or sepia. Am I stuck in a landscape rut? Take studio shots of interesting stuff. You get the idea. And I'm never afraid to dip into the archives when none of the above helps and I want to post something.

One thing I would add is that if you find an issue or even just something interesting about an aspect of photography, make a post on here about it.

The example I would quote is the one below, where all the indications are that I have a sub standard uv filter on one of my lenses.

Finally please take part in some of the challenges. Whilst you will never know them personally you do pick up a familiarity with members and their photography style.

You say you have 'always been pretty casual about it'. For me that's the way to go. Stay casual and it will all come as it goes. Commenting, constructive criticism, views and the PP are nice but don't let them get in your way. It will be a burden otherwise. It's why I do not comment very much (sorry). It's also why I don't have many followers (that's a choice). And it is also why I like the project (kinda second nature by now). Welcome back and enjoy the ride.

@mastermek - I completely agree. Although I definitely want to improve I don't want it to be a burden. So I will take it at my own pace.

Hi Teri. I was at a loss when I started and really just started to explore the functions on my camera. I was very eclectic in the photos that I took and continue to be. I paired up with a couple of newbies and we would suggest a theme for the day or week. Looking back at some of the tags was also helpful. When lacking inspiration I would follow the words for the month but as I have done this month just dipping in and out. The only pressure is one that we put on ourselves.
Enjoy the journey and I look forward to following this with you.
