I dropped my Nikon Tamron 18-400 lens and sent it in for repair. I thought I had an extended warranty but apparently the Tamron warranty was only for 6 months and the camera shop where I purchased it closed so I am unable to verify if there actually was any extended warranty. (I can't find anything other than my bill of sale.) Repair info says shock damage, zoom damage and internal cam barrel bent or cracked. I purchased it for about $650 in Jul 2020 and the repairs would be close to $400. My question: Am I better off purchasing a new lens rather than paying for the repair? Thoughts?
@genealogygenie I accidently dropped a camera with a lens on it and could claim on my house & contents insurance for replacements of both. Would that be an option?
With insurance, I think you need to consider two factors; firstly the excess that you have to pay and secondly if you claim on insurance, you are likely to be faced with an increased insurance premium for at least three years.
Considering the value of the lens I would write it off and buy either a new one or a second hand one, preferably from a reputable source.
So sorry to hear about your lens! Sad to say but it is probably better to get a new one if you can't use a warranty or insurance. However, you may find for just a little bit more than the repair you can get a better one/new one. If you don't want to spend that much, like Joy says, there are several ways to buy used lenses that are still in perfect shape for a lot less than new. That's how I ended up with my zoom and wide angle lenses.
