For a while there, thanks to all my wonderful 365 supporters, I was on the trending and popular pages regularly. Now it doesn't seem to matter how many of you grace me with comments and favs I can't get on the popular page! What am I doing wrong?
I think this is funny. A few years ago we tried to crack the code for both pages. It has absolutely nothing to do with the photo I don't think. It seemed to be a combination of comments, views, and favs.
Ross had a post in the Blog section that discussed the algorithm for the popular and trending pages. give it a search, I can't remember the title or the magic words to find it at this moment.
I most often hit the popular page in the wee hours of the morning (relative) and only for a few minutes at a time.
it's a mystery until you've read the blog on this. but while i appreciate my photos getting on the popular page, i am more excited when i see my photo being featured in the 'curated' page.
@summerfield thanks, I rarely think to look at the curated page, but now you've mentioned it...seems like both my recent shots made it up there now. thx. I'll have to keep a better eye on it.
The blog post here explains most of it. http://365project.org/blog/behind-the-scenes-of-365-project A few things are out of date now (Suggestions has been replaced by Curated, for instance) but I think the bones of the process remain the same.
Like others, I pay more attention to the Curated page than anything. And I love your photos!
@ljmanning HI Laura, thanks for the link, and I knew it would be a complicated algorithm, but was just frustrated! Ironically my latest windmill photo made it on the popular page yesterday! And, many thanks for the positivity for my photos, its much appreciated. @mastermek pretty sure the bill was paid, along with electricity and water :) @summerfield I will be paying more attention to the curated page in future! thx
I only go into the PP, TP and Curated, and not all that often, to see what photos from fellow users I may have missed :) my enjoyment comes from the comments and favs.

Any time I bring it up to Ross he apologises and has a reason and he fixes and for a while I'm there again ... I don't even really look at that stat anymore as it just doesn't mean anything when people with 0 comments or favs are there
@koalagardens seems to be working fine for me. Why do you say it breaks regularly? I haven't changed any of the algorithms for the popular, trending, curated for a few years now.
To summarise how they work...
Popular = Features users photos where *relative* to their average # of views/comments/favs - this photo has significantly more than their average.
Trending = Absolute # of views/comments/favs - so when you're established and frequently get lots of comments/favs and the popular page doesn't feature you as much - you'll probably be featured here.
Curated = Effectively some anonymous "taste makers" choose what's on here. They don't know who they are.
New Faces - Same as the Popular page but filtered only for members that have recently joined.

@annied I'm with you Annie. I actually never visit the popular or trending pages and I didn't even know about the curated page. I sometimes look at the New Faces page to see who may have recently joined. I also enjoy looking at the Top Twenty page because there are some truly stunning photos there that I may otherwise have missed. I enjoy reading the comments people leave on my posts and I try hard to reciprocate. This site motivates me to get out and shoot on an almost daily basis and inspires me to try to improve my craft. That is all I require. If people enjoy my photos enough to comment and/or fav that is a bonus. Thanks @scrivna for creating this wonderful community
