Looks like Canon has "crippled" the camera so that it doesn't even turn on with a third-party battery.
This is in addition to Canon not letting third-party manufacturers develop and sell auto focus lenses for the R- system and in some cameras there also seems to be problems using third party flashes.
I've been mainly shooting Canon DSLRs since I switched from film to digital (yes I'm that old :-) but even for a Canon enthusiast like me, I won't even consider the R system now if I ever decide to buy a newer, mirrorless camera.
