Always post what you enjoy taking pictures of- exactly as Liz said. To broaden your way of seeing, the challenges are fun and also get others to see your images when you tag them.
As for me personally- if someone follows me- I follow them. When they comment on my images, I always comment on theirs. I've been on here for a while and have lots of people that follow me, but if they don't leave a comment (even if it's just a "nice shot" kind of comment), I will probably not see their image as I don't always have time to scroll through my home page feed.
365 is really a great community- very positive and supportive- so you can look forward to more people viewing your images as you join in on different challenges and follow more people.
I agree with @olivetreeann Mostly the people I follow tend to follow me and we have a bit of a regular banter and community feel about visiting each other's pages.
Challenges can help too as you meet more people, but most of what I do is simply post my diary and I visit the people I follow most days but not all.

Yes, put up photos that you like. The best advice I can give is to comment on other peoples photos. If I keep commenting on someone's photos and they never comment back, it's hard to keep commenting as it takes time and there are so many lovely pictures to look at. My philosophy has been to get comments, be willing to give comments.
@praisinggod also add the person's @ tag when you're responding to their comment Angie- like I did here. That way they are notified that you have looked at their image.
Comments are more to do with how many people you are interacting with than what you photograph, so follow lots of people and comment on their photos and generally they will reciprocate.
