Help with Aperture

April 12th, 2010
Hi, I've recently been using Aperture, and I want to know about organising photographs.

I previously used Image Capture to get pictures from the EOS, then had a look through them using Apple's Quick Look feature, and open the good ones in PSE8 edit, and put them in an 'edits' folder inside of the import folder. I sometimes do HDR using Photomatix Pro

I really like apertures editing tools, but I would like some advice on how to organise my photos. Is it best to keep them in their original location (e.g. 2010 > April > 12) and then use Aperture, but have it set to that location, or store the images in the Aperture library, I assume that by keeping the current filing system it's easier to put the photos into Photomatix.

Any advice on what's best is appreciated.

What I do, personally, is keep them in their original location, and upload them so that they have a reference file marker. It saves on hard drive space, and keeps everything in one spot. It's easier for me to organize them in this way, because I'm anal and need to know where every single file is on my computer.
When you store images in the Aperture library, it copies the file and stores it in the package information in the "Aperture 3 Library" file in your Photos folder...it's extremely inconvenient to move the actual files in the package information, so I just do what I said above. Be careful though, I think that if you decide to change your folder structure for the originals after importing them, the link between your referenced Aperture file and the original file is broken, so you might have to re-upload. But if you're not changing the folder structure in your photos, it's not a big problem.
And I do believe that if you edit a photo in Aperture, it does change the file in the original location, but I'm not sure if it overwrites the original photo. You could test that on a crappy photo you don't care about, first. I don't care much if it edits the original, because that saves me the step of exporting the edited images, and replacing the original file (like I used to do in iPhoto, it took me forever). I think I'd much rather have all of my editing saved than the original, sometimes crappy version of a photo, so it's helpful for me that the editing goes straight on the photo.
I don't know if this helped you but it's how my workflow goes.
