Am I being stubborn?

A family member asked me to take some pictures for her business website. Just a favor that I don't mind doing because I can definitely use the practice. The problem is that she wants me to do some major editing on the picture. I think the edits would depict the product as something other than what it actually is. Also, I don't usually do much on my pics anyway. A little cropping, the smallest amount of fix on the color if I didn't get the flash right... that sort of thing. She wants me to "just take out" part of the object I was photographing... Opinions? Should I do the edits or tell her to take it as I shot it?

easier said than done, especially to a friend or family, but id probably explain what your limits and capabilities in photoshop are and suggest that if she wants to "alter" the actual image (other than enhancing) that she should do it herself or find someone else to do it?

tricky situation. good luck :)

Depends. Are you being paid? If so, give em what they want, let them worry about the ethics of it. Thats advertising.

For example, the breath mint "Certs". They always advertised that each mint has a "drop of Retsyn". Subliminally, this made the purchaser believe that Retsyn was their secret ingredient for better breath. But, Retsyn is actually another name for Sugar.

And that is advertising and marketing.

Nope. Completely volunteer. It's for a floral shop and she wants me to change the way some bouqets look. I don't think I'm going to do it.

Sounds like an awful lot of hard work, and would probably be quicker to shoot again - taking flowers out of bouqets in PP sounds like a nightmare! I don't think you should do it.

If this is what they want why not do it? I assume you like your family member so if that's the case why not do want they want to help them out.

In answer to your question i think maybe you are being a 'little' stubborn. :o)

On the other hand if its because its a lot of work thats a different matter. Particularly if your doing it for free.

This isn't the picture but it's a close.

They want me to "take out" the stems at the bottom so that it looks like the whole bottom was wrapped. Heavy Sigh. That makes me tired just thinking about it. Big edits take me f.o.r.e.v.e.r because I'm not used to doing them. I'm way to new to do it where it looks right. Plus I don't want some crappy fix on them and then have everyone know I took the pic. Make sense?

I certainly understand why she wants them that way - it looks better. However, if I ordered them and thought they were wrapped all the way, then got them and the stems were sticking out the bottom, I'd be a little upset.

If it's just for design, I don't think it's deceptive, however, if it's for product, it is a little.

It seems to me that if she wanted them to appear wrapped all the way, she should have just taken the extra minute to wrap them. It's going to take a lot longer in photo shop to edit it than it would have if she had just set up the flowers the way she wanted them.

I'd tell her that, but then, that's just me. I can understand why you would be hesitant to.

I agree with Alex completely. I was going to suggest they wrap them before the photo is taken. By all means, if you're doing this voluntarily and you're not comfortable with heavy editing, then you need to let them know. If money is involved, it's normally what the customer wants.
