"Texting" terminology

May 12th, 2010
ok, I know this is a little off subject, but help.

Here's the deal. I don't text. I find it repulsive, just the like "The Freds", for those of you that remember the Pirhana pic.

Anyway, comments have "texting" references. I haven't got a clue what these Venetian Doubletalk character references are.

This is pathetic....Can anyone point me to a dictionary that explains all this rig-a-maro. Or just list the ones that are used very often and what they mean. Perhaps it will help in my understanding some of the comments out there.

I'll get with the 20th Century soon. I promise. Thanks.

It's ok Chris, I find myself lost at times (and I'm in my late 20s). I usually turn to Urban Dictionary when I come across slang that I don't know the meaning.
May 12th, 2010
Whenever I don't know, I just "google it" ... That being said, here are a few I know:
LOL- Laughing Out Loud
ROFL - Rolling on Floor Laughing
LMAO - Laughing My Ass Off
BTW - By The Way
IMO - In MY Opinion
IMHO - In My Humble Opinion

I, too, am not very saavy, but this is a start ...

I text and I am still lost on some of the lingo I see hear some days!
May 12th, 2010
Erp. Well, it depends. Personally, there's not many txt terms that are applicable to 365, in my opinion, except for 'lol' (laugh out loud/that's funny) and smileys.
You could always look here though: http://www.netlingo.com/acronyms.php
(Pretend I didn't just Google that, please). xD
May 12th, 2010
LOL @ Stephanie!
May 12th, 2010
Chris - I had to go online to get the lingo so that I could talk to my neices. The problem is that I was using the wrong lingo at times. Some items have more than one meaning, be careful!
May 12th, 2010
See? Here is what I am talking about.... "xD", the use of "@", etc, etc, etc. WHAT?

by the way, my fave is "IDK". One of my employees used that one with me some time ago. My response was to "Start "K-ing"

Well, I didn't get fired.
May 12th, 2010
I can barely understand Texting lingo.
...I'm a 17 year old girl who texts all the time.
I prefer to write properly at all times, it makes me angry when I cannot understand what I'm reading.
haha, I do however overuse "lol" and "lmao".
...does that make me a hypocrite?
I hope not :P
(I also Use way to many faces :)
May 12th, 2010
I just had to google IDK to make sure I had the correct definition! Great response Chris.

xD is a laughing smiley face (look at it sideways)

@ has come more into use since Twitter exploded. It usually denotes that you are replying to the person after the @.

My fave at the moment is \0/ which is a person with their hands in the air and means "hooray" or "celebrate".
May 12th, 2010
start k-ing! love it! great response! I txt all of the time and I now am having problems spelling correctly and using "real" words. txt lingo changes constantly and is different from county to country - city to city - generation to generation. If I don't know what it means I will respond back with ? The site Stephanie suggested is the one I have used before and it's in alphabetical order 2 (:

IDK Chris. @TEOTD, does it really matter? IMO, it's 2M2H anyway. ROTFLMAO.

lol means laugh out loud...? Well then I've been wrong for so many years!
I always thought it was a person drowning...

I'm just playing
May 12th, 2010
wow, I could go on and on about this sadly but after being on online forums for a couple years now you see all kinds and pick up on a few favs.... To add to Denise's list

TBH = To be Honest
OMG = oh my god
TTYL = Talk to you Later
BBL = Be Back Later

Most of the symbols you are talking about though are smiley faces or expressions... xD is like two squinted eyes and a big smile or laugh, :) is a reg smile ;) is a wink, :0 is surprised, :p is tongue sticking out, then some throw in a nose ... :-) and if you see 8===D thats a penis haha

oh and the @ is at just like it is in email

May 14th, 2010
... wonder what we will all be talking like in 100yrs, our English teachers will be rolling in their graves, ...lol... lol.. (o; ...
May 14th, 2010
my 14 year old tells me it's deeply embarrassing if anyone OLD uses text speak (i.e. my age) and will I kindly refrain from doing it ever, ever, ever again, especially anywhere his friends could possibly see it! :P
May 14th, 2010
OMG Steve H your smiley face is round the wrong way...
May 14th, 2010

OG Triple OG - Ummmm Wow. You may have a little too much free time but that is very cool. ( I've probably dated myself calling something cool)
May 14th, 2010
i have trouble with it too sometimes. when people say stuff like 'IMHO' i always read it as 'i'm a ho!' and then laugh and get on with the reading the rest of the comment.
May 14th, 2010
(It was only a copypasta job, I didn't type that out by hand!)
May 15th, 2010
HAHAHAHHA! Chris!
I usually never get them either and I'm 17...
May 15th, 2010
Steve wins at the internets.
May 15th, 2010
Denise Vetromile I think IMHO means in my honest opinion
May 15th, 2010
It's humble. Trust. Not that humble/honest are that different, and it's pretty much the most pointless, pretentious TLA/FLA you can ever use.
May 15th, 2010
WTF???
May 15th, 2010
HTG, I don't use text speech when I speak IRL, but I do use it alot online, but of course it depends on the situation. If I am conversing with frineds, then it's used a lot. Otherwise, in a forum like this, I would rarely use it, except when trying to be funny ;-)
May 15th, 2010
Also, here's one more: the opposite of IRL is OTI, fyi.
