Holga/ Lomography

May 16th, 2010
Hi All
I'm looking at buying a plastic camera, something like the Holga/ Diana range, but I don't know whether to look at 120mm or 35mm? Is medium format going to give me significantly different results? Is it much more expensive to but and/ or process?
Has anyone got or had one of these 'toy' cameras and would like to share their experiences?
Plus they look pretty cool!
Oh, they take these kind of photos if you've never seen them before...

Medium Format is A LOT better than 35mm, it has a lot more resolution than 35mm because it is bigger

Thanks No Name, but if I am never going to print them large scale (and most will be viewed digitally) will it make much difference? Do the colours saturate better?

I have both a holga and a Lomo LC-A. I like the Lomo a lot better. For one thing it meters, so you don't have to guess the exposure (or rather what film speed you need to use). It's easier to use (the film advance stops when you get to the next frame, there's no need to tape the film back on, you don't need to stuff cardboard near the film spools to keep the film plane relativity flat...)

The holga has one aperture, which is close to F8, and it has two shutter speeds - cloudy and sunny. One is something not unlike 1/100 second and one maybe 1/60 second. These speeds are very approximate, they very from camera to camera, and they change over time and the spring wears out. So you'll likely end up with well over or under exposed images.

I got tired of the holga, pulled the lens off it, and mounted it on my digital camera for a digital holga look... And once my brother returns my laser drilled pinhole set, I'll convert it over to a pinholga. The Lomo I still use occasionally.
